It's no "version"
.- Original SMB2 was deemed "too difficult" for the western audience at the time. It was published much later in the SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.
.- The USA SMB2 that was published was an visual adaptation from another game Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic. Then, this version was later re-publised in Japan as "Super Mario USA"

I love this game though. It's so cute, and with such interesting settings - the backs of whales, going down pits, fighting with radishes, throwing a cool-shades mouse's own bombs back at it. I played this more and enjoyed it more than any other Mario Bros game, and drew more art from it. The real shame of the reskinning is that it prevented the original game from ever getting its own following and sequels.
