Even without comparing the content and bringing any negative biases to the picture, even my favorite twitch streamer just spends the big donations he receives on pizza and butthash, Marine takes a chunk of her earnings and invests into things like Connected Fantasia, this incredible MV, the regular videos she puts out, covers and the list goes on. You get a lot more for your money, that's undeniable. Most of it you get even if you didn't put any money in yourself.

That stream was really a nice example of necessity being the mother of invention. She was lamenting in an earlier stream that her birthday and anniversary were so close, which meant she couldn't have two concerts, and wishing she didn't choose July for her birthday. But even as an idolfag who cares about the music the most out of any Hololive content, I still think it's better to have the two events being different like this. It makes things feel more fresh and exciting. When she said the anniversary stream "wouldn't be 3D", I was expecting a regular Live2D thing, not really fun 3D skits, and that she just meant "not a 3D concert".

Okay so, I do really respect Marine for trying something new and experimenting while backing the entire cost herself.

I really don't think there's anything pretentious about it, it's fairly straightforward. I don't see it as a plebfilter either. I'm a big Gorillaz fan, so forgive me for making a comparison that isn't very good, but to me this sits between Plastic Beach and The Now Now, if anyone is also a fan. I would never say Gorillaz is "pretentious", or whatever. It's fairly mainstream music. You either like it or you don't.

Just having your head in a different place at the moment, different goals, different stuff you've been enjoying, all of this will be reflected in your creative output. If we got 5 songs that sound just like Ahoy at once, none of them would be special, instead of being almost the poster child of holo originals, and a staple of every karaoke stream. I think this can be worked around fairly easily with a version with more backing vocals than you'd usually have specifically for this. Similarly to how whenever a member sings the version of Ahoy without the chants and tries to do everything themselves, they almost die out of breath.
If 今宵はHalloween Night can have like 30% of the song as backing vocals in an actual live concert while being a group song, surely something similar for a solo karaoke won't get any complaints from the audience.

I think it's how well it ties to her theme, character and aesthetic. The instrumental is pure pirate fun shit, like in 2:42, and the vocals also reflect that quite a bit both in lyrics and melody. The parts we're supposed to chant out loud in Ahoy are things we feel and think while watching streams, instead of just the traditional "hai! hai! hai!" to go with the melody and support the idol. It's an anthem to her whole channel.
The overall positive and pop vibe may sell it short as "another idol song", but it's much more unique than "being an idol is fun and I love my fans" songs like, say, Daily Diary (which I also enjoy). The message still holds true for Ahoy, but it's expressed much more in character.
She could totally pull off a full Maximum the Hormone cover. The energy is already similar.

To me, melancholy is a recurring theme of her streams. It's the main feeling I have when she's sharing stories about her past, mainly the work related ones, but also some family ones.
Like for example, I don't think she ever openly said what exactly happened to her mother (correct me if I'm wrong), but it's clear that the oldest stories involve her, and the more recent ones don't. That life experience feeling the gaps of things left unsaid often brings a feeling of melancholy and nostalgia to her stories.
Even her insecurities with some of the song's themes like one of the more successful holos, arguably the most right now, asking people to choose her, any side of her is fine, because they're all her. She's pretty open about her need of validation, and laments when there are too many collabs in any given week, because she can't get that validation from talking to chat.
