most important one. keep it as vague as humanly possible. even saying something like "my town is a fucking meme full of meth addicts" can lead a dedicated autist to figure out you're from sneedville, tennessee.
>no outside pics
ties back to the previous point. for example, a reflection of a license plate is enough.
>mind what you say
that one's obvious. way too many people online accidentally let some personal info slip past the filter, simply because they get carried away in a discussion.
>new accounts
another obvious one. reusing old ones, some of which may be tied to your identity, is a glaring risk. i personally recommend protonmail for your email address, but i'd advise you to look on your own.
again, those are the few points i'd consider the most basic. you'd want to give it a good think, try to find your weakest point and either work on it or avoid situations where it could fail you.
look into people who got doxxed, look into their behaviors and habits that led to this happening, try to learn from others' mistakes.
final important thing is, if it ever fails, don't panic.
all of that is based on past experiences with other people online, plenty of which made these mistakes. i like to say that "your safety on the internet" starts with you.
tl;dr a vpn's no good if you mess up the basics.
