It's from merchandise sales and large sponsorships like the Sendai Aquarium and Sushiro collabs.

You say that if she only cared about money then she would be "grinding her ass off to maximize numbers", but she doesn't have to do that because the majority of the work for those events and merch are done by other people. Focusing on streaming won't maximize anything other than her relationship with her fans and her fans' ability to feel close to her.
However, the reason that Gura's merch sells well and she's able to acquire these sponsorships is because of her fans' dedication to her, which in turn is fostered and maintained through her spending time with them in the form of streaming.

So hypothetically, if Gura didn't care about her fans and her only concern was maximizing her personal profit while minimizing the amount of work she has to do, then she'd continue to seek highly lucrative sponsorships and collabs while doing the least amount of streaming required to maintain her fanbase and their feelings for her.

As someone who's been supporting her from debut, it's clear she realized how dedicated her fans are over time. She'd also always try and reassure us by explaining what her breaks were for.
Over time, she found out that she didn't need to treat us that well and mostly everyone would still continue to stay. Eventually this led to weeks of unexplained absence without any notice or reason, which in turn eventually turned into months.

Because lethal company is a game that requires all the player's POVs in order for the audience to know what's happening if the other players die or if they go somewhere away on their own, which happens a lot. They knew that and that's why they had Gura stream her POV to them through discord, because it would be weird to have one member completely disappear from the collab everytime she died.

What exactly has required her to fly to Japan in the last 9 months?
Her only 3D appearances were Fauna's 3D showcase, Marine's birthday (or was it anniversary?) concert, the New Year Countdown concert, Holofes, and possibly the Taipei karaoke unless she was using mocopi from home. It's difficult to tell without seeing any clips from it.

But we know that Fauna's showcase was recorded during the Summer, Marine's concert was recorded months in advance, the NY countdown concert was most likely recorded in the Summer with November being the absolute latest. And holofes was recorded some time during her months long break.
And so in 2024, Gura's gone to Japan most likely only once or twice. Once for recording holofes in January unless it was recorded at the end of last year, and second, the only confirmed time for holofes itself and visiting Taiwan days later.
It's unlikely, but it's possible she went for a third time if Cover really had Gura and Kobo fly to Japan to do 3D for the Taipei karaoke concert, but I'm guessing it was more likely mocopi, because Kobo was only gone and not streaming for four days.

So we have only ONE confirmed Japan visit in 2024. So no, she isn't constantly going back and forth between the US and Japan, preventing her from streaming.
Keep in mind that everyone else at the Taiwan concert has streamed multiple times since then, except for FuwaMoco who are recording their 3D debuts with Advent in Japan.
