Go to pixiv or danbooru and start looking up tags of characters you like and save the pictures, eventually you'll start to get an idea of what character you should be after finding some common themes between all the characters you enjoy. After you do that, you can either get a designer to make a design and to get a PNG drawn or do vroid, be sure to come back later for questions.

It's finding similar interests and connecting through that.
I'm good at "networking" because I'm out here trying to actually make friends, others may not be interested in that and that's fine and dandy but there's virtually no difference between the two.

The only logical distinction you can make is if you yourself view it as something less than a friendship.
But just like a friendship you can't force a connection, it's gotta happen over time, both sides have to be willing to interact with one another.
