I think hololive english still faces a generational issue. Not necessary there is a age gap that makes It hard for the talents to relate to each other. Rather the time between advent and when gen 2 came out is such a long time that they are going to be functionally different. Like myth as a group doesn't exist and promise is rather close, but the connective tissue between the girls is weak. With phase even though having twice as many girls as hololive the connectivity is much higher. Like half the reason that the main tree of Cover Corp works so well is that alot of the Japanese girls visit and know each other off screen. Phase despite not having the resources of hololive english has had as many offcollabs with each other as hololive english.

The holoen fanbase seems to be stable and mostly aren't 'vtuber hobbyists' but are 'hololive hype beasts' who are especially numerous when Gura does a return stream. I watch Phase almost exclusively. I jumped in once the males were introduced into HoloEN. I was primarily into Gura.

You can already see the problem here. There's no point in discussing or pitting Phase against Hololive because it's nonsensical, Hololive simply is the biggest game in town. What will make or break Phase in the end is whether or not maleshit starts to outweigh CDGCT. Yes, the appeal of Phase could theoretically be summed up as "spicy CGDCT" as opposed to the more seiso Hololive, but as time went on and on Phase is starting to fragment into girls who collab with males and do shit react content/grifting like Pippa or someone like Panko who is spicy and energetic but no males. It's this apparent diversity that's actually slowly pushing me towards indifference or non-involvement. While someone like Panko, Remi, Uruka or Shiina is well worth the time and investment on the other hand you have a Pippa or Lia. The audiences aren't united, each will try to push the other into being more like them or completely avoid this or that girl and that has resulted in a very fractured kind of audience and thus company culture. It's a difficult and long-term untenable situation. A recent example is how once Kirsche tried to grift with the Offkai thing we all divided into two camps, one who wants politics as a whole to be absent from vtubing regardless of spectrum and the other who want to be "based."

We have a deep identity problem that will at some point come to bite us in the ass and potentially break us. In any case a portion of the audience will leave. I am firmly against male collabs and see CGDCT as the only purpose and viable path for vtubing. Everything beyond that, the grifting, the males, fleshstreamers, all of that is pure, unfiltered grotesque shit that's leeching off of and corrupting vtubing. Notice how this opinion is in stark contrast to how some others in Phase feel. That's our Achilles heel. We failed to develop a full, proper, ironclad identity.

In the end I miss Gura. The Gura that streamed. I was deeply into her.

I agree with the youtube commenter in regards to hololive's commercialization being a big problem. They no longer feel genuine. In fact, I feel like their decline as a company I was willing to support was when Coco decided to leave. She saw and felt the changes as a result of consecutive controversies and went out on her own.

Hololive lives from interactions and inside jokes/lore. It is pretty much impossible to recreate anything that could catch up with Hololive.
It is similar to Touhou, nothing could beat it until some short term fad (i.e. Kancolle) came along that again died while Touhou stayed strong. And keep in mind that Touhou and Kancolle weren't really comparable media.
So if anything could compete it would have to be a novel concept that would redefine the Vtubing meta and I don't see what that could be.
The only idea I have is AI Vtubers that would allow for more personal interactions that a real person cannot do, but hardly any company would want to throw in that much cash.

This is what made Vtubers explode in the first place, that they are not just themselves but also playing a bit of role.
Going with that even further by creating not only backstories but arcs with a writing team behind it would be a way to excel here.
