It's a taboo that only harms the vtuber in question long-term.
Some people might like the fresh start and in those instances, I think that should be respected. But in most cases it isn't their choice to begin with.

They all have different ways to circumvent this. Matara refers to Nijisanji as Hollywood and mint refers to it as heaven. There's the fig leaf excuse of "it protects the talents from stalking and being harassed in real life", but as we've seen that doesn't really hold water. The truth is that Hololive marketed itself as an "idol" company partly as a joke, the teeming hordes on /jp/ that forced the creation of /vt/ were mostly Hololive fans that fully bought into the "idol" marketing but interpreted it in their own way for their own aims, and said fans were able to dictate the rules of the new board as they were given input into it. Hopefully we're moving towards an era more similar to /pw/.

It's a relic from 3d idol culture, where its much harder to change one's identity. Can't really go into surgery every time you start a new gig. With how much drama has been happening in the vtubing community, that silly rule has been slowly eroding, and it will fall completely as time passes, at least in the West.
Same goes for face reveals and fleshtubing. Twitch made great strides to destigmatize showing your face(if the talents wants to anyway) as vtuber. Vtubing is still a pretty new subculture and is finding its own identity in the West away from rigid Japansese social norms.
