I agree it's pretty autistic to just go up to someone and ask them if they watch chuubas, but you obviously don't use that as an icebreaker. You'd ease into the conversation and then once you get a gauge for their interests, you can delve deeper; most people are okay telling you about entry-level shit they enjoy if they like your company. Well, at least the more socially well-adjusted people that aren't full on autist/chuuni wearing fucking Naruto headbands or t-shirts. Here it's fine, because I can't see that. In person, I am repulsed by someone doing that, and because 9/10 times they are also ugly.

The downside is not sharing many interests, but you can get into things you wouldn't have experienced otherwise too. I've been watching anime since I was a kid. Many people did. But most people don't bother watching more than Pokemon or DBZ. I was watching Haruhi when I was 12, and it just went from there. I have a friend who actually got into anime because I recommended NGE, and some of my friends do like battle shounen and nothing else, but most of the people I talk with would look at me weird for talking about anime, or they looked at me weird for not talking about GoT 3 years ago. Most of my friends I made online and met irl. It's never too late to make new friends especially those who share your interests if you find yourself unable to talk about whatever you want with who you know. Sadly since the coof it would be hard to meet people irl but it will end eventually.
