but also remember, language learning is a sport not a field of study. 90% practice, 10% theory. just keep doing reps and watching streams and you'll slowly start to pick up more. Try pausing a stream and noticing the new kanji, see if you can identify the radicals or the sound, say neat, and then go back to watching
it takes jpniki until high school and beyond to learn most of the kanji, just like it did for you and vocabulary.
Protip: you really don't need to know how to write them all, but you do need to understand stroke order. Just learn the basics, and then start slowly gathering extra info as you run across it.
Like "oh, that kanji has this pronunciation too, interesting" and make a flashcard. Same kinda thing as starting to recognize prefixes and suffixes, separating out root words, and all of the other things you learned to do in English.

Don't learn kanji. Learn vocabulary and associate kanji with meaning. You'll know how to read kanji by deriving the meaning from context.
People will chime in with this onyomi and kunyomi bullshit, but you're not learning chinese, and there's literally no reason to know every reading any individual kanji can have if you're just learning JP for the sake of watching chuubas.
You can honestly just watch JP-subtitled vtuber clips for immersion only, slowly pick up words, and be good-to-go for most conversational level JP in like a year if you do like ~4 hours a day of reps probably.

Note, I didn't say anything about learning how to write or speak, so if you're willing to omit those things, you can expedite a lot of time spent if all you want to do is consume and not output the language at all.

It's basically like this anon said.
Learn hiragana and katakana. It's easy and it's good for things outside of vtubers like video games and porn.
Then install a browser extension like Rikai-kun or the alternative one that a lot of people like.
Then just watch streams and eventually you'll notice patterns like how everyone in chat types 悲しい when something sad happens. Mouse over it and the extension will give you the reading in hiragana and the definition.
Do this for long enough and you should be able to recognize a lot more kanji in a fun, organic way.

I felt like kanji was way more logical and natural when I was learning mandarin. The grammar, everything just fits with that flow. I mean, after you learn pinyin you really don't have a choice, but comparatively kanji always felt out of place in Japanese at first. It's weird having to add hiragana and modify the grammar that way, and sometimes they use them sometimes they don't, and it really doesn't fit into the logical frame of english...
once you learn japanese you become aware that it's fucking impossible to understand anything without context because it's literally vagueposting, the language.
at that point you buckle down and grind kanji, because it's the only context you get half the time. Then you realize.

Also, no. It's not going to help you more. You wasted your time. Japanese have tons of different readings that aren't in chinese.
The only thing it will help you with is getting a general idea of what they're saying, but you won't be able to read it or speak it.
Also, Japanese kanji is most similar to traditional chinese, not the retarded simplified shit from mainland china, which won't help you at all learning Japanese.

If your goal is consuming content, you don't need to learn how to write which is the hard part imo. Reading is much easier. It's been years since I've started learning, but kanji really gets a bad reputation. Every new learner often fails/gives up because they're scared of the big bad kanji but you can choose to not to "learn" all of them in one go. Put a bit of effort into it and it's totally doable. I learned like 700-800 of them while studying grammar and moved stopped. And by learning I don't even mean completely remembering the meaning and readings. I just familiarized myself with them and I did around 20 a day which just takes about a month+. Even then I would argue that you don't need to start with that many. There are people out there that learned 2100 in one go without learning any actual Japanese and get burnt out. There are multiple readings to a kanji but you pick them up as you learn words and eventually you'll be able to start guessing the readings on new words. New kanji will be learned in context with the word. Learning them in isolation is pretty unnecessary. Once you familiarize yourself with recognizing different characters, the newer ones become much easier. Anki has a ton of beginner kanji decks that people can do which streamlines the learning honestly.

This is retarded and whoever told this to you were lying. Every non retarded Japanese can pass N1 with zero issue. They know all 2,136 常用漢字 as it is a requirement to learn the in high school and that's just the common use ones, if you want to read books, you're gonna need more. However, it's nowhere near as difficult as most people make it out to be, just don't do any retarded heisig meme method, learn vocabulary instead. Note how you cut the word "most" out of my post, and then shifted the goalposts further by adding "non-retarded" to your post. I assure you, every non-retarded English native can pass English proficiency tests with ease, because if we just ignore that most people are retarded suddenly we can paint a picture that doesn't exist. No, I was very clearly saying that you actually have to be mentally challenged as a native to not pass a language test as difficult as middle coolers take. Because N3 is around that level or even lower. Even in N1, literally nothing will be above high school level, you have to get only 100 points out of 180 to pass and it doesn't even fucking have an output section. If they can't pass N1 they can't read the news or even play most games comfortably.

Also, JLPT levels are multiple choice, you don't even have to know the answer, you just have to get it right out of 4 options. It's honestly ridiculous, which is why everyone who's been learning Japanese for a while don't take it seriously. Being able to pass N1 means you're intermediate, it's like having a B2 English.

I had a meeting once where I was translating for JPsan about what ENsan's project schedule was for some activity not in Japan. But ENsan said "Yeah, we'll be going there to start this project next week", which I appropriate corrected to specifically indicate "there" meant his local place.
The next day, I get a message from JPside and they're like "Hey we heard they're coming to Japan next week, we've started looking into hotels for them and cleaning the place up what kind of food do they like so we can make dinner reservations, we've got all these preparations to make"
...nigga what? He told his managers that ENsan was going to JAPAN, NEXT WEEK, and made a huge deal about it. I had to pull chat logs and politely explain in excruciating detail to him and his manager how he had massively misunderstood the situation by reading waaaaay to much detail into the word "there". JPsan got moved to a different department that didn't have to do any overseas work.

This is only half true. Most japanese people would fail JLPT N4 and N5 if they had to take it on the spot. And that is 90% down to not being able to write some kanji without looking them up.
This is a consequence of writing them by hand a lot less (virtually never) these days and not a fault of the language.

N1 does not have an output section, which is simultaneously a good and a bad thing. It's bad, because it only requires you to memorize, not to practice, so you might end up being able to pass N1 due to your reinforced test taking skills itself, while being unable to buy stuff in a konbini. However, it's like that, because finding certified Japanese teachers who can score your output would be insanely expensive. JLPT is one of the cheapest language tests around, there are countries where you can take it for $15.
Here's a few earlier tests cause clearly some of the thread has no idea what they look like

For those seeking reps, watch JP clippers with JP subs. Focus on listening, but observe the subs. Don't pause to look up kanji, just absorb.
Do this every day for like 10 minutes, observe progress after a few weeks. Preferably, watch them talking about something you know about so you have context for your brain to make links.
