For people living in the digital age, the songs will feel a little weird at first. But songs and stories were a timeless part of culture before we could record audio and picture, like we have it now. So for something like fantasy, it makes sense to have them as a way to feel cultural sentiments and characters. I love the world and themes of it. Tolkien drew on so much of history and folklore, that it is a dense read if you go in to the details / inspirations of that. He originally made the Hobbit and the world out of his own passions and life experiences (he was a WWI vet), and the Lord of the Rings was written piece-meal to his son through letters, when he was fighting in WWII, hence why you get many references to the politics of war, and what war does to people. Its definitely an amazing read.
