why would i want to learn Japanese now that we have AI? i found an open source ocr in hugging face, downloaded it and made a fork that connects with the free deepl api, i can finally read all the fucking porn i want, doujins, mmd videos with subtitles and shit.
The last step is to make it automatically read my screen, but i don't have the time rn.

Japanese is a very context based language it will take some more years to be usable (and I'm not even talking about voice-to-text AI). I've seen people using the AI cope since 2019 and these retards are still waiting for it while repschads are doing good.

i did my tests with some vns and doujins (fan translated), the ocr + api combo wasn't perfect compared to them at first, but then I realized this thing you're saying about the context, the app worked better after i started sending the data formatted as conversations instead of snippets of dialogue and sentences, and it improved a lot, i'd say it's like 80% to 95% accurate depending on how much data i send per request (the more accurate, the slower it replies).

It'll also take years to get to a level where you're able to translate more accurately and with comparable speed to MTL. You'll be able to avoid some of the common errors more quickly but you won't have the vocab or grammar overall. And of course, that's a ton of hard work, whereas with MTL you just have to sit on your ass and wait.
I don't really see the reason to do your reps unless you're planning on emigrating to Japan. Anime and manga are usually translated, and for those that aren't we'll probably have capable MTL within the decade. If you want to live and work in Japan you'll need to the conversation skills but simply consuming Japanese media as an EOP is extremely easy whereas learning Japanese is extremely hard, and those years of time and effort could be expended on something more enjoyable and/or marketable.
That said, if you just love learning foreign languages, go ahead.

Anki is a meme. Learn grammar and immerse yourself.

>> No.72332159

>>72331291
What does "fine" mean? Being able to understand simple phrases and occasional full sentences? If you're actually able to understand the most of what they're saying you've massively outperformed the majority of learners, top 0.1-0.01%. Most English speakers take at minimum a year of full-time study to even be able to pass the N1, and lots of people with an N1 are absolutely useless at Japanese.
If you studied when you were very young, i.e. too young to post here, that goes out the window, you can definitely learn Japanese relatively quickly if you still have the neuroplasticity for it.

>> No.72332238

>>72331291
Yeah I don't know what he's talking about, you can find examples online of people who catalogued their experience learning Japanese from scratch, and most get fluent in reading and listening after like 3-4 years. Here's one guy, he lives in Japan now.

anyone who's first language is relatively phonetic (most slavic languages, indonesian etc) can learn japanese just fine

>> No.72332550

>>72332359
I don't think it has anything to do with being phonetic. That's a non-issue. But people who speak languages that are more similar to Japanese are definitely able to learn it much faster, if you're Chinese for example you can actually be competent in Japanese in a year.

>>72332790
and you think that helps you learn japanese? are you retarded?

>> No.72333554

>>72332790
The lack of phonetic spelling makes it hard to speak English if you learned it purely from written text, (this is also a problem with Japanese, because it does things like sometimes omitting vowels e.g. す + a 'k' sound, following a certain rhythm and having word meaning change according to stress, though they follow mostly consistent rules whereas English does not). But having a first language that uses phonetic spelling does not make it any easier to learn Japanese.

Going good. I just started about 3 weeks ago. Started with Cure Dolly but didn't care for the vids so I'm learning grammar through Japanese the Manga Way and Tae Kim. Really struggling finding time for immersion, but most of the time I use Okayu's Minecraft streams as they're very fun to watch. I have about 200 vocab words now and plan to read either Yotsubato or Dragon Ball. Also really want to read Slam Dunk in JP but I don't know if I should learn more words before I start practicing reading.

>> No.72335238

>>72332866
you retards keep asking how to read Japanese and fucking it up anyway because you're used to your retarded English language which makes no fucking sense phonetically
meanwhile Slavs don't have to think about that all because it's simply natural that words are read as they're written to us
it absolutely helps with learning the language and makes it easier to not butcher it

>>72333554
Exceptions in Japanese are much rarer and quite consistent.
Having phonetic mother tongue does help. Read up on studies. English natives have harder time learning JP because of how different the languages are. Or look around the net, there's plenty of ruskies who are surprisingly competent at nip, especially in VN scene.
