Only talking about models/art/rigging, no personal feelings about the talent themselves. What models do you love? What are your model pet peeves? Which artist’s have the worst case of same-face for their chuubas? Best/worst model upgrades? I’m an artist and I love discussing, creating and critiquing models, hopefully some like-minded people here! Some of my random takes:
-in general, simple is almost always better. Gura, Korone, etc.
-most models have too much SHIT going on. You don’t need 3 different layers of stockings/straps/ribbons. It looks too busy.
-there’s a way to make models sexy but keep it tasteful. Especially uuohhtubers. Obviously there’s a market for AVtubers but realize that if you look like a sluttuber, thats how you’re going to be perceived and treated.
-Roberu’s face looks like it’s made out of clay but it kind of works.
-and my final hot take: I prefer shylily’s older model

Over-designing seems to be a common mistake. Sure, you look cool for a bit, but then it just gets cumbersome to look at. Also, dragons that aren’t either too moe or too furshit in nature, when?

I believe models should have more hand and hair rigging. Ghibli hair rules in full force. Chuibas forget to use toggles so put that work into the base model.
I've seen animations for blowing kisses. Wonder what else could be done on that end that fits different chuuba archetypes.

Absolutely agree. This is the thing that always stands out for me. To me it's the difference between Phase and Idol. Phase has relatively simple designs while Idol complicates things.
I've heard from some vtuber fans that they love the straps, belts, ribbons. They explicitly say that it looks chuuni, and they love chuuni stuff.

OP here, just realized another pet peeve of mine: heterochromia where the eye colors are VASTLY different, not even necessarily the color itself but the depth/saturation of the color. Selen and Luna look fine. Irys’ old model looks fine. New Irys and Pochi (RIP) new model is way too jarring. Marine’s is prob my fav, they’re just different enough. I notice a LOT of indies adding this to their model to make them stand out, and it does, but not necessarily in a good way

Idk why but the first thing I noticed about Kanata when I first got into vtubers was that she looks like a turtle, like she either doesnt have a neck or that she’s suffocating from her collar/scarf thing. A lot of VTubers have this idea that they need to constantly be redesigning and changing things and doing all these redebuts, which I'm just so tired of at this point.

They also seem to be very unaware of why people like their model in the first place, and will often remove or change things unnecessarily for what they percieve as being "an upgrade" when in reality they're losing all the charm and value that people enjoyed in the first place.

Look at Snuffy, Shylily, Pochi Wanmaru, and OP for examples of this in action.

One recurring reason I've found for indies to keep changing models is because of their artists and/or riggers ditching them, which means no updates or new outfits, so they're either stuck with an old model or have to get it redone. Corpos don't usually have this problem because they have a contract with their artists and can rely on them being there long-term.

Other times they might just want some change though. Indies have that freedom and I can't blame them for doing what they want with it.

They usually can't. There's a difference between an animation studio working on project together, and an artist trying to replicate the style of someone they've never met. One example I remember is Olivia Monroe, who had a very particular art and rigging style in her previous model that she tried to recapture in the new one after the previous artist vanished, but it couldn't be done.

Easier to just remake it, and often vtubers enjoy revisiting the design process to reinvent their designs anyway.

cute, but hard to judge design when it's a chest up. Personally I think with the iris should probably be more oval rather than circular makes them look ʘ‿ʘ (and not in an unhinged hot way) , and I'm guessing (and hoping) it's just the angle, but the face is a bit lopsided.

But in general what you show is usually what we see, and it's clean and neat work, pleasant to the eyes

But how? Why do they need to meet them? They can just look at countless hours of previous streams, and existing art.
If I'm a programmer and take over somebody else's code, I can look at the previous work and build on it instead of recreating everything from scratch. This is normal in most fields of work. To me this sounds more copyright related, as in you are not supposed to steal somebody else's style.

There's a number of things behind this.
One is that all artists have their own "vibe" and it comes across in near everything they do.
This is less prevalent in the industry artist field as they're taught extensively in how to copy this. So professional animation, etc.
But most internet artists are independents with no experience in a professional/industry environment. They can't really do it.

I don't think art styles have copyright as such, but it might be something like that too. Artists do get very antsy about copying or tracing, since they all have a very particular style that is part of their brand. I imagine it'd be a bad situation if you had a vtuber who commissioned an artist with the instructions to replicate the style of another artist, but the credits for the model's art goes to the replicating artist rather than the one they're imitating. If other potential clients saw that model and went to the replicating artist, which is bad for that artist because they aren't hired for their own style, but also for the original artist who is losing clients.

I confused myself for a bit while writing that so I hope I got the point across. The other anon probably explained it better.

as an artist who specializes in this style replication is easy if you're willing to train yourself to know what to look for and have the patience to tweak for fucking ever to get it right, however you're not going to find a reputable artist to replicate somebody else without the original artist's permission. if the replication is changing media type (2D -> 3D or vice versa) there usually isn't an issue because it's a different skillset and thus the new artist isn't trying to usurp the other's clients

While we're talking Yuzu, her rigging exemplifies what I'd consider to be the ideal physics settings.

It helps a lot that her artist put great care into rendering her skin and curves, but what really sells her movements is that *lack* of bounce and jiggle. It's so common to overtune the physics as an aesthetic choice (for some like KevinX, it's practically his calling card), but when you really take the time to think about how the character's body would ACTUALLY move, it really makes all the difference in grounding the model and making it feel more real. Their body type matters, their perceived weight/fat distribution matters, their clothing matters. In an ideal world every model would have its own unique physics tuning (I suspect riggers often find "what works" and apply the same or similar settings to every model they work on, for convenience/efficiency).

Another great example of what I'm talking about is Olivia Monroe.

But there are some models, like Laimu's, where the bounciness really works for the design.

It's just that her art doesn't fit every character design, and I think Lily is one of those designs that Dya isn't the right fit for.

If you ask me, Snuffy's model journey has been one of self-discovery. Finding the model that truly fits who she is. And honestly that's more important that sticking with something just because some nerds on 4chan don't like change. (Having seen this brought up many times before, I believe most people complaining about Snuffy's newer models haven't actually watched her in years and don't know anything that happened after they left besides Smilfy.)

Her new model (still WIP) feels like the culmination of the past 4 years.

I saw her give a few reasons, like not feeling too comfortable with the difference between her voice and the model, but also stuff like getting frustrated about clippers exclusively clipping vtubers with designs like that and her not feeling supported enough. Or something like that. Funnily enough she did get clipped with the new model, but not by much and not for long, and it had no lasting effect. Later she returned to her old model, but the damage was already done.

Money. Or rather, views. She thought being a whoretuber would get more eyes on her and more clips, but it did the exact opposite. It also backfired on billibilli, where she was relatively popular for some reason, but since they were cutting down on inappropriate content she was basically fucked. I'm not worried about views or anything, the number one reason I want to stream is to keep me on task while I do artwork and figured having a vtuber as a facecam would be better than no cam. driving people looking for horny AWAY would be ideal, so on top of being unique that's why mascot is appealing to me

Best thing you can do is keep it to yourself and keep supporting the vtubers you like as best you can if you're a viewer, or keep grinding if you're a vtuber.

If your "upgraded model" is a significant departure from your original design then it is automatically shit.

big agree that kawaii has top tier models though. picrel is one of my all time favorite models and i didnt even know of kawaii when she was active (prolly for the better as i would hate to have known it and then lose it. only two models that i am not 100% huge fan of are neena & sava. that said i do feel gen five models were a step down compared to gen three but i dunno i just liked gen threes pastel palette and the designs looked really nice when next to each other

I think you have to thank Yuzu herself for the realistic rigging. She repeatedly expressed that she prefers people draw her on model with medium to small breaststroke, and I'm sure that focus has extended to her working with her designers/riggers.
