In a class of 23 people, a couple of gamer looking dudes know how to save documents locally by themselves and the rest need help saving something locally, as a PDF and then afterwards finding the document because they have never used folders before. Programs - Oh, I mean "apps" - are just too streamlined now. The program has a fixed folder where it saves and loads data to and from. App Store/PlayStore/Whatever Store downloads and installs your apps and games at the click of a button. If you're using iOS or MacOS, you don't have to deal with drivers at all.

"emotional intelligence" is a cope stupid people use to convince themselves they're smart in their own way. The truth is "EQ" is still just pattern recognition and logical reasoning. You can't have high "EQ" without also having a high IQ.
The "High IQ, low EQ" stereotype is a few things:
- Smart people being assholes, emotionally intelligent but don't care about how people around them feel.
- Autistic and socially awkward because of it, though higher-IQ autists tend to be higher-functioning because they're able to regulate their own emotions and mask better, both of which require emotional intelligence.
- People who aren't actually high IQ but they have specialized knowledge that other stupid people mistake for intelligence. They completely fall apart when facing novel situations that don't line up with their training and that includes social competency.

I told them this was where Microsoft culture was leading, we all did. They wanted it to be tiered so fucking bad is the thing, they want white foremen bleeding money overseeing 12 mexicans they picked up at Home Depot, just like every other industry. They want creepy apprenticeships with people who don't want an apprentice and endless, endless tiny qualifications and classes that are 70 bucks a session. Code "boot camps" and endless bullshit to make it look like a topic that's only as complicated as we make it is just another deep cave of already determined complexity from which the Ore of Get Me More Money is extracted. If one day people could occasionally be crushed to death in a LOTO checklist incident while programming that would probably be amazing to them, that way they could have a shitty funeral where their kid becomes an embittered drug addict just like everyone else.

The one industry that could have been anything anyone wanted immediately had a giant iron collar shoved onto it's neck by boomers and will basically never recover during our lifetimes, the culture will continue to be boot camp tralala and On Wednsdays We Kode stem girls horseshit until we're all dust because we allowed our boomer parents to tell us what "business" consisted of when for them it's just a series of repetitive images of people in uniforms. And work from home? Oh god of course not, of course it's time to freak out that someone might not be psychically harassed by a know nothing manager who got his position by being a gay little fixer bully who lucked out a couple of times.

Yeah fuck programming, it's like meeting an alien shapeshifter who's decided the best representation of humanity is a teletubby voting democrat. If they could find a way to make you die at 52 from exhaustion from programming they would add it immediately.

Most people really should be able to install and uninstall programs, operate anti-virus software, manage passwords and password resets, and use Word or a similar program with basic proficiency.

Basic proficiency with Excel is often extremely helpful too but not strictly required. The only other thing I can think of is maybe learning how to swap printer cartridges (not hard) and how to plug and unplug your cable modem/router.

It's pretty much impossible to keep up with tech unless it's your job and even then you're still stuck with blind faith in others as you work on your won little niche, or you be a jack of all trades who doesnn't really know anything.

TLDR; Computers are increasingly complex, have more and more people working on them, and everyone builds new shit hoping the foundations don't break while not knowing what the foundations are/were.

>>71325649
Even cars are harder to work with. Shit like prioritizing bulding them over repair means it's easy to build but time consuming to take things out to repair minor faults, then you have the fact cars are now adding shit like computers and software so you add complexity and now a mechanic can't do shit because a car company locked the heating seats behind a subscription. Or they just seal shit away to make it hard to access, then you need a ton of specialist tools to actually work on a car, etc.

Even mechanics I know hate working on cars these days because of how they are made.

/g/ absolutely expects better out of people but are super jaded, and /pcbg/ relies on "rituals" and evidence from trusted sources without understanding why. I've mostly stopped posting outside of niche generals about actually programming, tech jobs and the occasional product release where people can actually discuss stuff like micro-architecture and hardware on a deep level because most of that board is now brand circlejerking most of the time and tech help.

No one can conceivably know what is happening at every layer of what is going on with various things, and modern society is built upon everyone trusting each other they are experts of their chosen field and keeps things working as good as possible to get real world work and other things done. Just get enough understanding about what is happening like a rough idea of how a computer gets built up from sand and how everything is coordinated together to give us our modern computing experience. That gave me a deeper appreciation for computing and led me to in the end, I chose to specialize in Linux and get paid for it even though I went into the field expecting to go into chipmaking for my electrical engineering degree.

The lack of computer education among kids born after 2000 or so is because computer lab courses were defunded during the general trend towards defunding everything not specfifically beneficial towards pensioners which was spearheaded by the baby boomer generation out of self-interest. This is similar to how most of gen y and gen z were 'latecomers' to getting driver's licenses, their parents not understanding that school classes educating kids in driving were defunded in the 1990s.

A lot of people fundamentally do not understand the concept of "a good education, a good teacher" anymore, they just think if you spend money or plob a kid near a book they will somehow acquire knowledge by osmosis- leading to ballooning university costs with dumber and dumber university grads. People seem to have lost a very necessary understanding of education as being something that has to be quality and actually teach you and that people don't just learn by existing.

This probably won't end until generation boomer is finally dead since they by far fall into the "I know how to change a tire why doesn't my teenage grandson somehow know how to do it from birth what a loser lmao" shit, unable to understand you need to teach people if you want knowledge to be passed on.

So, throwing money at the problem is both bad and pointless, and also good and should be demanded. Thanks for the info.

I just thought about it and elementary school/middle school only taught typing (which I never picked up despite always doing the lessons), school never taught me anything about files, file types, folders and other basic shit. I learned most of that at the library around 2013/2014 messing around and using stuff like adobe and Photoshop cs6. Before that I figured enough out to get Minecraft mods working on my younger brother's phone, which is how I learned to hate my old apple tablet. Stuff like Google classroom and the other stuff bundled was all that was used in class. It got turned into a standard.

Depends on the OS and the file system.
Android, iOS and ChromeOS want you to believe that image on the left is how they work.
Windows, Linux and macOS want you to believe the right is how computers work.

An accurate "how computers work" for filesystems would not be a big pile of documents, but mixed-size pieces of documents with arrows between the pieces, and other arrows pointing to those arrows.
Unless we're talking about ZFS, in which case it is, in fact, literally a tree. A tree that uses all of your RAM.

You are the redditest redditor that came from reddit and spewed your midwittery here.

I'll make it simple for you retard- cutting actual educational programs is bad, you should spend money on actual educational programs. Throwing 1 million bucks at a private school is bad, if they don't teach you anything of value, but people mistake expensive cost of education for good education.

Your stupidity is the product of your poor education, your midwittery is also a result of that. SAD!

No, I'm sure that we can save the world if we just give shitty teachers more money. Then they'll be less shitty. That's how it works, right? Pay morons more money and it magically makes them not morons.
Expecting students to learn necessary skills because they're necessary? Realizing that education on basic computer skills would reasonably fit into numerous other courses and doesn't need its own special publicly funded program to exist? Whoa, now you're talking crazy!
Go fuck yourself, parasite.
