Most people who shower their oshi with money treat it like they're paying for a subscription service. If you think of vtubers as competing with shit like netflix, the former provides a lot more value but is free instead of charging you a premium to view it. If you cancel netflix because you're watching Mori instead, it's pretty easy to justify throwing your netflix money at her instead, understanding that you're enabling her content by doing so just like a subscription funds netflix's ongoing campaign to butcher every good thing from your childhood. The difference is that you're given the choice to opt-in for Mori, but the fact that doing so is absolutely necessary to enable her to continue producing her content is obvious and no different from services that paywall you.
It's not altruism so much as it is just understanding the relationship of necessity upon which this kind of content functions. It's up to the consumer to make media profitable, regardless of whether it's mandated.
