I was hyped with the Red trailer, then my hype started to dwindle with every subsequent trailer. After episode 1, I realized I didn't like the high school plot and the character writing was all over the place. As great an animator Monty was, his writing was below amateur. Miles and Kerry was arguably worse.

At least the character designs were great and the VAs did a decent job for Western VAs. Lindsay especially with Ruby. I just wish the VAs had better voice direction.

Basically. It felt like a bog standard North American high school experience (with magic crack) as a way to add conflict and insecurities to the adolescent casts. It felt like a cop out.

I know exactly how it went down. They looked at anime, saw that 80% of battle shonen happened in high school and tried to do it, but America. It could've been great if there were competent writers manning the helm, but we got Miles and Kerry, the duo who has never watched anime before meeting Monty.

I checked and Ruby has 1.2k subs on Twitch, that's $50k/year even after the Twitch cut, or $25k after a 50/50 split between talent and corpo. People always say how everyone liked RWBY for muh fighting animations, but in reality even animation was fucking janky as hell. Early RWBY was carried by the enthusiasm that shined through the jank. It had SOVL, it felt like some retarded anime I'd make up in my head in my teens, and it was completely unapologetic about it. Ironically, as the shows production values increased and Monty died, the show started taking itself too seriously and lost it's charm.

Its not really about the animation, its the choreography, monty knew how to stage a fight. After he died they threw more money at it and tech improved sure, but you cant just put a bunch of good looking shots together haphazardly and think its going to make for a fun fight, it needs pacing and a good sense of space and monty was a master at it

They also didn't do anything fun or cool with the match ups after vol 3. Say what you will about the guys but Sun Vs Roman is a tight as hell fight visually. Monty tried to make the dudes as cool as the girls and his logic was always how to move to the next arcade mode fight of this VN fighting game he was cobbling together off a daily bender of redbull and a tictac case full of meth. The predictability and saminess of every post-vol 3 fight ruins them outside the obvious fact they're lazily grounded most of the time and when they do try to be whacky it just comes off as being a parody and not cool at all

and those action scenes (monty's legacy)...
