Many male vtubers are not pleasant for men to look at. That's the truth of it. Too many accessories, too overdressed, too twinky or - let's not dance around it - too well-built or hunky.
Now you can try and insult your potential audience all you like, going 'oh that means you're insecure!' or 'oh you're so petty!' but you can only do that to the people who even bother to have a discussion. Most people just feel uncomfortable - they might not even know why they feel uncomfortable - stop watching, and never come back.
Even the same concept can be applied to a stream overlay. Make one in garish colours and something that doesn't affect content in the slightest can lose you thousands of viewers.
Either pander to women or pander to men, but the latter is so much harder because you're fighting against every other male streamer out there and your model is not a buff.

Stream good games, be decent at them (males are generally better at games overall), and have funny or at least interesting commentary. I watch both males and females, but I find one of the benefits of male vtubers is they just care about games more than the women do 90% of the time.
