I'm feeling like HL as a whole is losing direction. Everyone gets 1M and a 7 figure paycheck regardless of what they do. There's nothing more to aspire to. Cover isn't investing in their talents to expand horizons either.

I never got this. With very few exceptions (3 members / graduated member and a few streams), the basic contents are pretty much the same - except they have more permissions now and the talents are generally happier with more popularities, fans and better income.
Unless you only watch Coco or Haachama, or you don't even watch Holo and simply exaggerated what Coco said, I don't really get the "HL is different" argument and I certainly don't feel that way. Sure, they are a bit more restrictive (for arguably good reasons), but you guys made it sounds like Holos are being put in metaphorical cages

People are feeling like that precisely because nothing's changed. It's more an issue of misplaced expectations really. People come into the vtuber fad because it's new and different, but then they get used to it and it suddenly loses that novelty factor. In other words, those people don't really enjoy holo content as much as they just like chasing new and different trends. But that group is a huge part of the fanbase, so it can't be helped.

Here's my blackpill, Hololive didn't "become" something different, it's more or less the same as it always was (and -that's- the problem rather), it's just that YOU (the viewer) have changed, or rather say gotten used to the format.
The novelty has worn off, and like seeing a magic trick for the first time is exciting but by the third time or so you know what'll come and the honeymoon period is over.
Now don't get me wrong, that doesn't necessarily spell impending doom for the company, as long as they can retain their paypigs who're already too deep into the parasocial swamp, and keep growing the revolving door of newfag audiences for whom "whoa an AMINE GIRL livestreaming gaems?!?!?" is still some fresh experience (and hope that some of them stick around as paypigs while the rest of the masses invariably move on to the next fotm fad), but yeah I can understand how at least older longtime viewers feel some -personal- disillusionment with the medium.
We used to have threads to the tune of "since I discovered vtubers, I stopped watching anime", etc. with the shared sentiment among many people being that current anime is mostly shit and after you've gone through all the classics there's nothing really worth keeping up with season to season, so many people dropped out and vtubers became their new obsession that monopolized their time ("it's like anime, but better, because the anime girl is talking live to me!"). I stopped watching anime too years ago, but yeah right now I kinda feel the same about vtubers too, and I'm probably not alone (most people simply drop out silently).

Asacoco was probably already untenable in the long term, and not just because of content issues but because keeping it up daily was overworking Coco to death.

But yeah, the restrictions certainly didn't help and only hastened its demise. To be "fair", not all of it falls solely on retarded Cover management, for things like the suicide shit they were probably just trying to stay in line of what general "guidelines" Youtube policy mandates, to prevent further trouble like channel demonitization or ban. But yeah it's easy to point fingers and put blame on external factors, but part of the truth is probably that Asacoco itself has run out of content. Remember Coco having to practically beg viewers to send in funny stories of the other Holos, and not really receiving much to work with. After the initial hype it became stale pretty quickly. I don't want to say Coco got "lazy", because again she also had management breathing down her neck, but yeah, over time it became just self-referential memes repeated to death (how many "haha drugs funni, amirite?" she managed to squeeze out is almost respectable in its own way, but not really entertaining), and in its last incarnation it was just a sad pile of "english lessons" and godforsaken "reddit meme review" segments, at which point taking it out the back and shooting it was probably a mercy kill for the better.

Isn't that why Subaru and to a lesser extent Kanata have been inclining pretty hard on viewership? Subaru's morning format is basically a watered down Asacoco where she reacts to fan's clips/comments and tells stories about her and other Holos. Kanata's idol show was also trending until management's red tape shut it down.
Essentially Hololive is playing too safe nowadays and needs more contents that encourage fans' engagement. The usual Mario-cart/Apex fan participant don't count. Ironically Haachama's lewd review or cooking stuff would have been some decent content but she leans too hard on the schizo shit. The new batches of Niji/NijiEN are in the same position as when Hololive started out - hungrier and willing to stray from the typical Vtuber stream.

Although I started watching Hololive only slightly less than a year ago, I kinda share a similar feeling. Ever since I got hooked on Hololive, it completely replaced anime as my go to medium for constant noise and distraction. But lately (last 6-8 weeks) it's been feeling a bit stale for me. When I look at the talents, it kind of feels like I'm looking at a store shelf full of the same products, but with different packaging.
Can't deny though that I'm also out of my honeymoon phase. Vtuber have become normal and aren't the shiny new things anymore. On top of that I also tried to follow way too many talents at the same time, which led to me changing my prefered channels every few weeks. Now I started to clean out my list and narrow down to those who I still actively watch. Next to that I've also started looking more at indies and NijiEN, which also brought back a bit of flavor. I really hope regulating my consumption will help retaining my overall interest in vtubing. Would suck a lot if I completely burned out on it since I think it's a cool take on expressing yourself.

Is my case with Haachama, 2021 was really a bad year for her, she started fine in January after returning Japan but since Cover axed her climax in the HaatoxHaachama arc I feel that is not the same... I can't feel any difference between girls streaming anymore. They all stream same stuff, they do it completely same way, barely any difference.

Remember how there used to be fan animations, memes, etc? And there are none now. Why? Because there are now no moments worthy. Same stuff, same way to present it. Everything was brushed down to be the same, what stood out, was disposed, even further propagating this mundane feeling.
