I won't say that's the main reason why I watch vtubers, but I did have that experience.
I oshi'd Ogayu because she was still just a comfy gaming cat at the time. It was late 2020, but she was still unsure about being forced into the idol side of things, still didn't like her voice, etc. She eventually changed to doing more coom baiting, though I'd like to think it's because she found she enjoys it since that's what it feels like.
But even beyond that, she also started to go harder on idol training because we onigiryaa supported her. She worked hard, put out an album, and became one of the few holos to have a solo live. This growth was very enjoyable to watch and be a part of, and happened over two years. All of this despite seriously considering quitting for months after the merge.
Thankfully, depending on the game she's playing, she still has that comfy gaming cat feel too.

I think this is part of why Myths journey was so compelling. Pre-debut everyone, including them, thought they were going to do similar numbers to ID, if not crash and burn completely. Then they fucking exploded with Gura rocketing to 1 million and the rest of the girls hot on her trail. They were all different to each other so while they didn't mesh quite as well as you'd want from a group there was something for everyone. Covid was both a blessing and a curse, they got great success from a captive audience but it prevented them from going to Japan and becoming proper 3D idols. They persevered, had Ame jerry-rig their own 3D from a box of scraps and forged their own destiny until finally they went to HoloFes and stood amongst their JP and ID senpais. It was a fantastic journey
