I wouldn't blame the Vocaloid songs, since most JP karaoke feature them pretty heavily and they cover a wide range of genres and moods. However, Risu made it pretty clear that it was supposed to be chill stream where she was singing songs that she wasn't very practiced with. On the other hand I absolutely love seeing her be a bit more chill about singing like this. Karaoke (I know it's acapella but it's functionally the same as a karaoke stream) is just about having fun it's not a professional performance. If you've seen any of Gura's member karaoke, that's a really good example of what I'm talking about. She just goes on for a while and then often takes some suggestions from chat. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and she has to abandon ship halfway through the song. It's simply fun.

If Risu is feeling more comfortable trying out stuff she's not practiced or trying new things in singing streams that's a really good thing. And seeing her so passionate about singing, genuinely enjoying herself especially when she went all out in that song was just so nice to see. Even more so with how bleak things have been lately.

I 100% agree. I think the only problem is that there is a mismatch between what Risu is doing and the expectation it creates for her audience. These chill singing-just-for-fun streams are great. However, when you only do karaoke once in a blue moon, it makes it feel like those streams should be a big deal and causes people to say stupid shit like >>6919410 when it doesn't meet their expectations.

It might be a problem that resolves itself if Risu starts to sing more regularly. Though I'd still rather she do the things she wants to do, since she really struggles when it comes to recurring content. (RIP MaBaR)

Exactly, the rarity of singing makes it a big thing every time it happens which discourages just messing around. 100% believe that it would be fixed if she sings a bit more regularly so it's not a huge occurrence whenever it happens. I do wonder if that overhype is one of the main reasons she doesn't do it much.
Like she says, contrary to beliefs of some people she loves to sing and has fun doing it. So hopefully she feels motivated to do more acapella streams soon like she mentioned wanting to at the end of today's stream. One of you in /hlgg/ was giving me feedback on this mix - would appreciate more.
I stopped trying to fiddle with the chorus effect when I realized she actually sang it twice. Why reinvent the wheel? Two unique vox tracks = 80s chorus effect, just add water.
Was originally using the vox from Nov but I added the ones from Oct too, and tweaked the mix overall. It's not a dead-ringer for the original mix but 1984 citypop vox mixing is a bit too Lo-Fi for my taste. If you think it'd be better that way I can just take all the air out of the EQ and reverb + turn the vox down to muffle them.
It looks like she sang the 12" version, so the verse from 1:08-1:42 is 4 tracked - dragged back from the 2nd time it gets repeated.
Didn't want to hammer Catbox by using FLAC for a soundpost again. Plus using opus lets soundposts have ReplayGain applied through the opus header, neat!

i would turn down the highs on the vox. if you want the chorus to be more noticeable, i usually pan them very slightly apart to get that haas effect, but i also tend to make my shit too wide, so maybe don't do that. might lead to some slight comb filtering in mono depending on how long you set the delay, too.
it sounds fine, and you can spend days tweaking it, but i'd say turn down the highs and call it there.

I'll take a whack at it tomorrow. I thought my MDR-7506 were making me mix too bright so I grabbed my EX800ST...and it's even brighter than the old one lol. Should probably be deep cleaning my ears instead of listening to ear cleaning ASMR.
That 2nd verse where there are 4 vox tracks does have #3/4 panned 50%. For the rest of the song I kept the "main" vox dead center with only the reverb panned (100% wide) - that was how the original sounded. Or at least how I thought it did.
During the chorus at the very end I'm competing with Mariya's original chorus which is part of the Instrumental. I already thought I went too wide on the chorus effect for the 2nd vox track there; only place I kept it.

I don't know if it's just her new mic settings kind of limiting what can be done with it or if there's room for EQ, but her vox sound muffled. Try cutting ~2 dB in the lower range (anywhere from 200-400 Hz, look for any unusual peaks) and adding some "air" (~2 dB anywhere from 3000-4000 Hz, or with a high enough Q at ~3500)

I have been messing with taking the "best" take for each part to use without reverb and then using the other for wet reverb only. Not sure how that will turn out yet since now Audition is chugging hard just to seek through the track.
