Don't conflate what commonly occurs with what is legal. Rich people can sue to try and silence someone, but that doesn't mean they have solid legal grounds for the suit. Anti-SLAPP laws protect against this sort of behavior, but not all US states have them. A court could find statements to not be defamatory once they go through the discovery phase and verify the statements are true, but you are correct that some people would rather just shut up and retract their statements rather than deal with all the issues and costs that arise before you ever get to discovery.
The statements costing him his job don't bear any relevance to whether or not they are defamatory, but it would be relevant to damages if the statements were determined to be defamatory. Again, if the statements are true, its not defamation and Luca would have no real legal recourse even if he does lose his job.
