People like Suisei/Ririka/Kanade are in the top 10 of HoloJP in terms of actual english proficiency (with chammers and bitch at top 2) and they're fucking dogshit at it from a professional standpoint, like struggling with the TOEIC/IELTS-tier. It's not their fault really, nipland as a whole is a lot less proficient in English than it was ten or fifteen years ago for some reason, not to mention the fact that 95% of all elevens are never gonna leave the country for an extended period of time. All of this basically means that their eigo reps are all done just to pass tests in high school or college, and those fucking suck.
Then again, they don't really need it since modern japanese society doesn't really demand you know english unless you're working for a foreign company or dealing with foreigners in your department, which for most holomem is kinda optional for the most part.

Most Japanese people don't need to know English because 99.9% of the people that they meet are Japanese and they have a surplus of media in Japanese. They'll still pretend like they need it though, but language isn't a skill you can just learn once and never touch again. You either use it or lose it.

I visited Japan in '98 and it was a completely different culture. That is something, in the process of diversifying everything and anything, we lost in my native, ancestral lands. If i want to experience my own culture, with its high trust and low crime, i have to travel to rural areas. The urban environment is completely alien to me.

I am jealous of nations like China, Japan - even India and the Congo... Because they still have what my people will never ever have again: a country to call their own - with their own customs, cultures, traditions, religions and people.

I remember hearing other stories from a JET teacher though that basically was like "They (folks up top) wouldn't let me teach this way (a better way) and instead made me teach English in a worse way". I think the program is just a hot mess of problems, really. Japan is in that awful spot where everyone is monolingual but not where they can’t increasingly feel the effects of that, especially as their population decreases.
I don’t know how else to put it, but there will come a time, and sooner than anons think, where knowing English will be almost mandatory to have a better life and not languish in poverty. That’s already the case in almost every other country.

Chink burger here. Don’t bother. There’s so many of us around that for professional purposes they’d rather pick us. Sure you can make a living as a “white monkey” in China (token white guy who stars in ads because racism), but it’s not worth the humiliation of bowing to zhangs.
It’s a lot easier to figure out kanji and I’m probably better at Japanese than your average weeb who tries duolingo and gives up, but that’s not saying much. And it’s definitely not worth picking up Chinese from scratch for.
Chinese is literally only worth it if you’re as much of a weeb for chinkshit as you are for weebshit. And the best stuff to come from China is Genshin and Honkai (which again, says more about what else they produce than about hoyoverse).

they just hire foreigners to man the cashiers on tourist areas and some other places where english-speaking tourists might visit
on all my trips to convenience stores I've only encountered 1 japanese dude, the rest were indian or middle eastern
there was a cute russian girl manning the cashier at nintendo tokyo in shibuya parco though
besides interacting with tourists or consuming english media I don't think they have a need for the language

My understanding is that the standards were set generations ago by people who didn’t know what they were doing or how English was actually used, and all the textbooks, coursework, and standardized tests were written/designed to meet those incorrect standards. I see that happen a lot of with the vtubers that do do English reading streams. It doesn't help that English is actually a lot easier to learn when you've got someone as an actual, in the flesh intermediator to help you pronounce the word instead of having to rely on your own mental interpretation of what you think the word is pronounced like. Even your native English speakers do this all the time with more obscure, cultural, or older English words. Gaol not being pronounced "gay-ole" but "jail" for example.
