Yeah, IIRC the general died in a kind of awkward interval. Ririka was taking a doctor-mandated break due to overworking her voice, and hadn't started doing her genkai meshi streams. And unfortunately, Banchou and Raden are hard mode for even anons that have been doing their reps, which just left Ao, who was super unpopular at the time, and Kanade, who doesn't stream much. They're all much more popular now

IMO, if you've heard a ton of Japanese dialogue with subtitles, and your brain works a certain way (which you probably won't know unless you try it), pretty much any SRS vocab system might help way more than you think. Drilling even just common easy words means your brain starts to be able to autotranslate those, and can spend more of its effort on the parts you don't know as well, and there's a potential tipping point where you might start to find yourself understanding whole sentences. And if you get good enough at it, maybe you could LiveTL for your oshi. It worked for me at least and now I'm one of Ririka's LiveTLs, so I'm glad to see a new place to talk about her.

Problem is, all of them still filter your average /vt/ anon (even the ones that stick to niche generals and not megathread / bait threads), some for reasons you've already mentioned
>Raden has interesting niche you haven't seen prior (rakugo) but she's Marine tier in terms of niche references that fall down on your head (so it's pretty much pointless to do live translation, let alone understand all the stuff she's saying) plus there are people who don't really care about rakugo (or any other form of japanese theatre); maybe there are some people who were filtered by smoking aspect but I doubt it was that much of an issue
>Bancho has unique way of speech and it either filters average anons because they don't like it or because they just can't keep up with it (again, think Marine or Kanata who have very high words-per-minute ratio when it comes to talking)

Ririka seems to be fumbling around a bit in terms of finding her audience. Shes got a collab with hoshikawa this week and she did that among us collab with more dudes after the GTA RP server, but she also streams a fuckload and is very sweet with viewers and interactive. Could just be a case of an all arounder.

Honestly, Ririka's actually doing quite well, just not in the usual metrics /#/ likes to go by. She gets a huge amount of SCs, 11th across all vtubers in December, even at her low amount of subscribers. And her subscriber growth has actually accelerated since VCR and the whole shorts thing, She's also starting to tap into her eigo jouzu abilities with English streams, which probably will help her there further. Her CCV still isn't great, but that's more of a meme horserace stat compared to the others.

I will attest to Anki that it worked well for me, it just doesn’t have the positive feedback like the web programs have. For example one day I’d pull up a Twitter post and realize I had no problem understanding it. Granted, I’m probably not near where I should be after three years which I admit is mostly a problem from my work ethic. Ironically, I was live translating that stream, and that one actually gave me a different brand of trouble, which is I found I couldn't keep track of which things were said in English and which weren't, so I'd keep second guessing myself.

But yeah, I personally actually do use wanikani, despite its not always stellar reputation, is helpful for the simple reason that it being a website means I can practice at work when I have some downtime.

I guess most of you are going to abandon Mel since you keep referring to her as Mel and not her roommate, then were hostile to the idea of making a thread to refer to her roommate.
To be fair, even if she hadn't lied to and betrayed me, I would've hesitated totally following her roommate too. This isn't because of the allure of her being a holomem, but the fact that her streams were too different. "mel" didn't really feel the same as Mel. Sure, they had overlaps in content, but Mel also provided a lot more than "mel".
I only went to "mel" because Mel streamed so little and I wondered what my oshi was doing and wanted to support her a bit more, and was paranoid about her betraying so I stalked her socials, turned out I was right the whole time .
And there's a a very high chance she'll turn into a bona fide vchooba now, with a 2d animated model and all, but I doubt she'll stop the 3d real life streams. She'll be just like Kson, at times using 2d model and at other times showing her real life lower body. A lot of people won't mind, but I personally would be very irritated by this. I don't even like 3d women. I watch vtuber's to escape reality, but seeing her real body half the time breaks that illusion. It's another major reason why I'd hesitate to follow "Mel" after the death of Mel.

Another certainty is that she's finished as an idol. You could say the same for when she was in holo, but she never explicitly declared it as a holomem. She pretended to be an "idol" when it was convenient for her to make money from fools, and then did whatever she wanted as a "talent" at other times. That shallow facade is impossible now. I don't think anyone still willing to watch her cares about that part, but it was something that originally drew me to her, at least when I foolishly believed it was genuine.

Yeah, Choco is one of my favorites, my Mel is pretty good, and RBC is kind of OP, or at least she was the last time I played her, but I've never really figured out Matsuri either. Her kit doesn't really seem to have a central gimmick to build around, except maybe tanking hits, but that's kind of an awkward focus. And it doesn't help that I'm not great at rhythm games.

Ririka's English is probably the best in all of HoloJP in everything but pronunciation, she can comfortably collab practically entirely in English at full speed with slang with Bijou, who barely speaks any Japanese, and has started doing English only streams twice a month, and the first one was fun, her EN senpai sent in 'useful' phrases, and she picked up not just on the basic phrases but even some of the nuances. She's also a massive game otaku, particularly for roguelikes deckbuilders like Slay the Spire, and obscure RPGs like Shadow Hearts, and indie pixel games.like Potato Flowers in Full Bloom. If you've got some dearly held game you consider too obscure for a Holo to stream, Ririka might be your best shot. Also she's some sort of Armored Core prodigy, she's very clearly a beginner given how things like moving the camera give her trouble, but she's weirdly strong in boss fights, even super hard ones. Kanade ironically has probably the best English pronunciations in JP, her actual ability to understand and communicate are nowhere near as good, but if there's just English in the middle of song lyrics, she sounds practically native, even though she's actually Korean. She wants to be a more music focused vtuber, which means while she certainly has her quirks, they're not as focused on compared to someone like Raden. About a month or so ago Mel also followed Shibuya HAL, a close friend of ayy lmao's that also runs neo porte with him. This was around the time Mel suddenly followed a bunch of males (this outraged a lot of former kapumin, but the kapucucks on here, like usual, said it was a schizo nothingburger), whom she likely connected with on a streamer discord.
