My hot take for Sekiro has always been that this boss is poorly designed and implemented, it's an awful way to introduce new players to what is probably their first boss in the game (unless they do Hirata estate first)
He doesn't show off the game mechanics in a meaningful way unlike most other early game bosses in Sekiro either he's just a shitty roadblock
I don't blame normies for stopping to play on this boss particularly, getting filtered by bad design is not the same as getting filtered by difficulty

You now receive chip damage (roughly 30%) when blocking attacks, requiring more deflecting.

Enemy vitality and posture is increased. Regular enemies that would normally be posture broken and vulnerable to a deathblow after a single Mikiri counter will instead recover.

Sekiro takes 25% more vitality and posture damage, as well as receiving significantly more posture damage if blocking instead of deflecting.

Status effects, such as poison, build up roughly 40% faster.

In addiction, ringing the Demon bell makes enemies have the stats of the next time of day (morning will be noon stats, noon will be evening stats, evening will be night stats, and night will progress to stats only encounterable at night with demon bell).

When the enemy has a big red icon over their head it means you can't parry it.
Sometimes it's a grab other times it's a thrust or swipe iirc. You get an upgrade later that let's you parry when they do the thrust attack.
