I only watch her on the fringes but still a very sad and unfortunate turn of events.

We'll never really know what happened and can only take their words for it but at least on the surface it looks like an amicable termination. She was even able to put out some final words.

I think what makes me the saddest isn't that Mel is gone. She still has her roommate's account, so I can hear her voice again, even if it won't be the same. And she'll still be able to see her friends, even if they aren't allowed to talk about it on stream.
But I wish they wouldn't get rid of her videos. I don't want to have to carry rips of her songs around on a flash drive for the rest of my life. I don't want to lose the more than 5 years of content she made. I don't want there to be a day when I can never hear her cover of "Vampire" again.

Perhaps they do not wish to leave any avenue for a terminated talent to have legal grounds against the company continuing to broadcast their content? There has to be some IP reason behind the wipes. Graduated talents are likely given the option to cede all things over. A terminated one isn't.

Cover isn't your Promised Land that works differently from other idol companies, people do get terminated and that means removing her Youtube archive and removing her from any promotional material, down to her presence on official Hololive site. In most cases idol companies own the IP aka vtubers and their content (in some cases vtubers can join as themselves and keep exclusive rights on their vtuber model and some content, but Mel is not the case).
The only reason companies don't use terminated / graduated idols in promo material or merchandise is because it brings ill will among the fans - selling the content of person who's no longer in the company. On top of this, a problem is that every EN gen debut crushes slower JP generals. Other than a couple ENs who only make a general when a stream occurs, they always have one up. During Myth, there was only 5. With Promise, there are 10 total (with 2 only being up when streaming). With Advent, there are 14. The other potential advantages could be that Ririka streams an absolute ton and usually has livetl, and will even be doing English streams twice a month and is open to EN collabs, which might help generate new posts to keep the general afloat.

That said, you've unfortunately also identified the potential downside. For what it's worth I think a lot of the catalog activity is more just people deflecting using her, rather than schizos specifically for her, but I could totally understand not wanting to take that risk.

It's entirely up to you all, but I too would love a place to talk about her that isn't global.
