It's been a while since I was there, but it used to be that meat was very rare in japanese meals. You'd only really have meat once or twice a week as a family and that was the general case. 90% of what you eat in Japan used to be steamed rice and miso. Of course in Tokyo there's a lot of convenience food that's mainly fried protein. But it's certainly not the norm for most japanese households.
