for SDXL, I'd say try training on base SDXL with OFT and make sure to set the constrain (try the highest from the paper: 1e-05)
base SDXL should have enough anime in it, it just needs to be strong armed a bit
also, make sure to set different learning rates for the the text encoder and UNet
I think UNet needs lower lr as it fries earlier (though OFT doesn't fry very easily)

Never tried OFT as usually half the stuff from kohya is out of reach for AMD users without bitsandbytes or other random cublas or whatever libraries.
I use scale weight norms to prevent overfitting and it works wonders.

It goes pretty quick on 7900xtx with 1 batch size, about the same speed as a normal lora on 6800xt, but for 12gb you might have to drop the resolution to 768x768. I don't know how much xformers would lower the requirement. For me with 1 batch size and 1024x1024 it uses up about 15-16gb of vram. 20-22 if I enable sampling.

I'm honestly surprised at how well it's working for me, everywhere I go I read that AMD supposedly sucks big fat cock at genning, and I've had little issue(after switching to Comfy from Auto, cause Auto wants to reserve 15GB of VRAM for an XL model for some godforsaken reason). I'm curious though what "long" is in your case. For reference, genning two images with my current setup, which has dual passes, takes around 4 minutes, or 1 if I cancel after the first pass.

Yeah, for a basic setup that's kind of slow. I can't test it against auto on my gpu sadly(again, xl models allocate my entire VRAM, making genning impossible), but I tested those settings in Comfy right now. Also for reference, this is on a RX 6800 XT, but I don't know how to weight my additional VRAM against CUDA and all of its perks, though the gpu performance doc suggests they aren't too different in speed.
Disregarding the first gen cause of load times, I take around 20s for each image.
I'd say just try Comfy for a while. It's not that difficult to get into if you've ever used a node based editor before.

Usually 1000 but on XL I see some that fit way quicker while others just slump midway and have to be restarted with higher lr. This is where scale weight norm comes in handy, because you can clearly see in the terminal when the model stops training mid-way as the average key norm is not increasing anymore.
This one was already fit by 600 steps and by 800 it stopped training anything other than contrast and minor details while baking in the outfit.
