You enter into one if you can make the content but don't have money to market yourself. When you sign to a label they front the money in the form of a loan you have to payback within a certain time frame or you forfeit any profit or royalties until it's paid in full. You make more money going indie if you know how to network and market. You just never hear about them in mainstream because most labels are the mainstream and only promote their own. I would NOT want her to. She sings for fun and rarely releases songs, and even if she's getting better at singing and played a lot of instruments as a kid, it's better to not go down a path that doesn't make much sense for her. Either way, I doubt that she could pull it off anyway.

The most important thing is reliability: the suits are making an investment on you and they want to be sure that you will bring more money that you cost.
