With keyboard even tapping will alert them. With controller you can do minimum strength thrusts.
You don't need to thrust at all though. When you enter the red seed the game sets your velocity to a flat value. You will literally always float by the fish with zero issues if you simply don't thrust. There's zero loss of velocity.
You can turn as much as you want without worry too. Turning and rolling uses air thrust which never alerts them. It's only the jet fuel thrusting they hear.
