(Chuckles) I'm in Danger Edition

Yesterday was a collab that was the first of its kind. As part of the pink cat's charity stretch goals she did a movie reading script with a bunch of other VShojo girls and Snuffy where they all read through the script of Tommy Wiseau classic, The Room! There was fun to be had by all as Melody regaled us with trivia about how fucked up the actual movie is, and Snuffy showed a side of herself none of us have never seen while playing the part of an extremely aggressive drug dealer. Definitely a stream whose vod should not be skipped if you missed it live.

Of course, today being Friday we all know that means the big event for the day is another DND session! Things are looking to be good in that regard so assuming no unfortunate last-second impossible-to-resolve problems we are ready to launch! We're still early on so if you haven't been keeping up it won't be hard to start from the beginning. Or if you just want a refresher our heroes were given a quest to retrieve a bunch of items or an illness they were already exposed to would turn them into murderous rage-monsters. Tensions are high as the group moved into a cave, found an incredibly scary entity, and are now being actively hunted by it. Will they survive? Probably, it's their first boss so it can't be THAT bad but considering a certain green deer has consistently rolled under 10 for nearly the entire campaign the possibility of tragedy looms overhead. Find out what happens during today's session!

Arc levels up players after they've made a big accomplishment, which most likely includes this boss creature.
A good thing about this leveling system is thaat you can solve any important encounter peacefully without having ot worry about "lost EXP" and still get to level up after it.

Arcadum uses a formula system he came up with to ensure that every boss fight/combat encounter the players engage in is scaled in a way that they can win. When players end up in places where they shouldn't be or some bad incredibly evil shit occurs, he makes it a point to tell them it's a fight they can't win, or one that's incredibly dangerous. For that to happen though it's usually got to be some crazy big-bad interference shit, like the Cataclysmic Parable from the last arc.

Well, not every combat encounter has to be lined up perfectly in terms of levels. It's entirely possible for level 12s to go fight some shitty bandits. However, combat is really boring if you're smacking the shit out of everyone with ease, so easy fights are generally avoided unless necessary. The best fights are always the hard ones because it provides good RP opportunities for characters. See the curse mechanics implemented for this campaign.

It's probably just a context thing. Like this specific one they're facing down could have been weakened by what it was doing before the group found it so it's feasible for a party so low level to take it down, that kind of thing. It'd be not-great storytelling if it was healthy and at full strength unless there's some other factor powering them up or something they don't know about.

Normally in DnD each monster has a challange rating and is designed with non-scaling stats. So the higher the lvl the bigger and stronger monsters you face.
Arc mosly makes his own monsters so there is no challange rating for the Mystwalker creature girls might be fighting today. It might look scary but have stats balanced for lvl2 party. If the same monster would apear before lvl10 party they would take it out without any trouble.

There's a stream where he breaks it down, if you have time. If not I totally get it.
Basically, he has various meta and non-meta factors he takes into account when setting up fights for players. Things such as burst damage capacity, healing capacity, total party HP, player behavior and player experience. Using this each party basically has their own fighting ability within the meta of D&D that he can represent numerically using his system. He uses this number to build enemies around that party combat efficiency number, some above some below. Now, this is only for custom boss fights. Certain creatures have set features and health pools and stuff that can't be adjusted. Usually, he uses numbers to get around that. Say you have a bunch of bandits who would be around equal with a level 5 party one-on-one. He might triple the number of bandits for an encounter with the level 10 party.

Additionally, if you want to see what some really high-tier bosses from the last arc look like, there's a doc for that. Otikata's Curse will probably end up fighting similarly levelled creatures, if not harder. Seeing these might help put into perspective how important scaling fights is, because the current campaign would get eviscerated.

As much as it might ruin the illusion, the training wheels never truly come off. Arcadum games don't actually carry risk unless the players continually roll 1s after 1s. He always weighs clashes and other enemy tactics in the players' favor, to say nothing of the fact that he keeps the HP of enemies nebulous so they can die whenever it's dramatically appropriate. I know he does this because it's a D&D SHOW rather than a GAME, but it's still something that once you know what to look for that the mystery and wonder is gone.

I have to say that I have really high hopes for this campaign based on what I've seen, if the girls are willing to take it seriously, which they seem to be doing so far. That's not D&D tho. Sometimes the rolls just ain't on your side. And while the girls were not the most observant in this (OH SHIT RIGHT THE FREEZING RIGHT) Froot basically had the right idea in desperation and then got fucked. Haruka had defense mode up and got fucked. Nyan tried to be a hero and hoped she could at least tank one thing and get Haruka back up but got fucked. Snuffy gets back up only to get fucked.

Seriously, this was some shit luck. The rage buff was supposed to be managed, but they obviously weren't good at that at all and very confused (Vei sure was) on when the rage counters triggered the random attacks. This made the rage mechanic a "no margin for error" situation and they had almost nothing favoring them.

The only favors they got was Haruka and Snuffy laughing off shouts and the former dodging a few times. That's it. Everything else went against them.

In Arcadum's setting that's just how it normally works. If a player has multiple characters, those characters all share the same fragmented soul, which can sometimes have weird effects on things. So the whole retaining the same soul but going into a new body would be the same regardless of who died. Although I guess there could be something special for her like getting to keep her old character's memories or something.

You're not wrong. He should really do tutorial sessions between session 0s and the first sessions. His current way of "they will figure things out as they play" is just bad frankly, both because it criples their combat and RP potential, and because they draw out easy fight WAY too long because they spend 3/4rd of the fight figuring out the mechanics, making the stream itself boring (even this stream was a slog until the very end after all the mistakes they did piled up and resulted in the chaos).
