Chess blew up because XQC started playing it and then a bunch of livestreamers hoped on aboard and they held a chess tournament on twitch like >>6623519 said around June of 2020. It has definitely reached high peaks in viewerships with several other major tournaments between E-celebs but the category has its own viewerbase that did a tremendous job at teaching noobies on how to play the game and get better. I haven't kept up with the community in a couple of months but Gothamchess and Hikaru Nakamura are or were the biggest chess streamers and would get big numbers even when they did solo streams with no big events coming up. To call chess a fad is disingenuous, the game just finally found its foot in the livestreaming community whereas before most GM chess players would make youtube videos.
