mcdonald's is better in most places outside the US. IIRC they serve beer at mcdonald's in france.

basically because most other countries don't (or at least didn't decades ago) have fast food as just a meta thing everyone just accepts exists and is normal, in some places they make it significantly fancier. people there expect any restaurant you go to to be a sit-down place and to put at least some effort into the food because that's normally what it's like for everything else that isn't a street food cart.

in the US the meta is that everyone just-knows that of course, you can go to like 10+ places to get hot burgers (or maybe something else if you're near a taco bell or jack in the box etc) in 2 minutes basically any time of day that are cheap and never were expected to be top-tier gourmet material, but are good-enough to keep you going. you'd think in such a competitive environment mcdonald's would try harder to keep up with other burger places but it seems they for whatever reason don't - I think, because if you have a preferred place in your mind already you're just gonna go to that one most of the time regardless of what the other places are doing, for example I never eat burger king and would rather drive twice+ as far to anywhere else to get a burger besides there.

In the US its cheap as possible to be competitive and usually staffed by simple minded people that cant do much else and fully expect to retire a fry chef. Higher quality means more overhead and chances to piss people off when Mookie or T-Bone mess up your order

In Japan its higher overhead and require euipment and training that isnt common over there so they have to market it as higher class than fast food in the US and thats even before Grorius Nippon Worku ethics

yes they have a chicken mcdouble equivalent, the chicken burger which is like 250 yen. Quality in general is better since the japs actually clean their friers and equipment and use non GMO shit. They have sokenbicha which is a cheap drink if you just want to sit in and charge your phone.

Aside from that there's a nice atmosphere. McD is very popular among JK and young females as a third place to get work done.

Before the 90's, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, all of these places were designed after sit-down restaurants. You used to only be able to eat at Pizza Hut via reservation. They only became cheap fast food as they realized they could all collectively lower their quality, spend less, but make much more.

Elsewhere, where they haven't had a media saturation campaign for two generations, they can't get away with that because local restaurants will eat them alive. So they have to actually try.
