The difference is XVI is always damage sponge because that's just how the game is designed. Tales of Arise is only damage sponge if you're not good at the game.

This isn't a "lol skill issue" comment by the way; a vast majority of people who play ToA will never play it at the level needed for the end-game enemies to not be damage sponges because the game never does anything to teach you how to play properly nor does it expect you to. It's very similar to Kingdom Hearts in the sense that there is a massive difference between the average person who beats the game and someone who knows and can utilize all the intricacies of the game but you'll still beat it just fine by mashing X and reactions.
