It’s way too geared toward offense, to the point where at a high level of you don’t know the exact DI to get out of certain pre-baked combo strings, you just perish if you make one mistake and get hit.

The parry system is also complete shit, since it starts on frame 3 instead of frame 1, meaning you end up with a lot of cases where you timed the parry right when you get hit but you ended up getting hit anyway since it came out too late. It’s the kind of thing that sounds great on paper but doesn’t work well in practice (especially online). Every defensive option is like that, meaning you can even have your defense stuffed.

The excessive offense is only made worse by the fact that there are no ways to escape and recuperate because there are no shields and ledges. Some people think having them makes a platform fighter too campy, but that really only tends to be the case when they’re mechanically poorly designed (like melee having intangibility on every regrab and never forcing you back on stage, or ultimate allowing you to grab it while going upward so you can’t effectively defend against a bunch of recoveries).

And that offensive focus is made even more overwhelming because you can’t actually tell what’s going on half the time. It’s a problem that’s kind of inherited from the pixel art style and the fast gameplay, but you would be hard pressed to look at any individual frame of gameplay and determine whether or not you’re actionable, or what actions you can take if you are. There’s no solid visual indicator of whether you’re able to tech, or if you’re going to just buffer a parry when you land, or if you can jump out of stun, or anything like that. It seems like you have to just go into training mode and memorize the hitstun value for every move. The same issue crops up with actionability out of everything else. Not enough frames and not dynamic enough posing to read it unless you put in a ton of time labbing.

But the most egregious issue, I think, is that the game seems to entirely revolve around knowledge checking. Every character has their own particular brand of gimmicky bullshit that completely twists any matchup, meaning you not only have to learn how to fight the other character, but you have to learn how to fight them as any character you try to play. There aren’t a lot of characters, but it’s still the source of countless baffling moments where you don’t know how to counter something. (And even then Shovel Knight covers every range and situation so there’s not much point in trying.)

Unlike other platform fighters where there’s a general strategy to playing the game that carries over between matchups, and where you can kind of get away with learning how to play your own game and go from there, Rivals forces you to learn every single matchup if you want to have a chance, and then doesn’t give you CPUs that are skilled enough to practice against. It’s another “good on paper” design decision that becomes infuriating when you actually have to deal with it. When every single character would come off as “cheap and lame” if you put them in another game, it’s just not fun to play.

I’m not even going to come out and say I have the answers to all this stuff even if I’m making one of these things myself, because I’m not sure I do. From where I’m sitting it looks like the game’s sequel is addressing all these faults (except maybe the last one), so that seems nice. I’m just sick of having to deal with so much bullshit to play the genre I like.

Melee really is both a blessing and a curse. It set the tone for how these games should play, but it also did it just sloppily enough that people have trouble interpreting what makes it good vs the result of those factors. People keep trying to get to “melee” without grasping what went into “melee.” Kind of like the Roman Empire, come to think.

Multiversus sucked MAD dick. The only thing it had going for it was being free. Inconsistent knockback, shitty unlock system, massively janky hitboxes, the worst physics I’ve ever seen… shit sucked so much ass it was unbelievable.

NASB had a lot of issues though. I didn’t think it was possible to make a game where mashing up close was a legitimate strategy even at mid levels, but they pulled it off. Honestly, what nimrod decided that making everything light/heavy was a good idea? At least the sequel is soft resetting lights into jabs/tilts and heavies into smash attacks. Then they also gave everyone wrastor air smash attacks too. Wild concept but it at least makes sense.
