The thing is that after 2021, the sportfes became a corpo mandated chore. The stages were built using command blocks by some interns and the holos just showed up during one practice stream and the main event. ENs and IDs were mostly out of place because they either didn't speak enough Japanese to bant with the JPs, too sleepy or they didn't really care about minecraft.
Cover basically realized it was not worth having a couple of interns on payroll building stuff for a yearly event only for the big holos to bail out

I've skipped out on the sports festival every year. It's fine to want to win these things and to get a little competitive, but it's not only the fans that start shitting and pissing themselves when their oshi loses. Some of the girls themselves cry out in frustration and the salt is fucking apparent. I haven't forgotten the Mario Kart tournament results either.

That's a shame... It's really the only time this year that hololive felt truly united globally. Even concerts don't quite give that feeling. And it's not just the day of, due to practices we got a whole week of collabs between EN, ID and JP which are way too rare otherwise. It was great for both the girls making new friends in the other branches (especially for Advent and Regloss their first time really meeting many of their senpais). Management should pick up the slack and set everything up so the stress isn't on Miko, Subaru and Mio. It's too important for the culture of the company to rest on the shoulders of just those members, who are busy with other stuff.

It's gonna return at least for the next year.
MK tournament is a bit different because if you're not playing too good OR too bad then your screentime is over after qualifiers - shitters get to enjoy Zako Cup while tryhards compete for actual first place. So it's unironically better to sandbag to get more screentime if you're just an average player because getting into Zako Cup is much easier than getting into tryhard group.
As for tryhards - Suisei planned to retire from it if she wins again (3 times is enough for her), but I can see tryhards like Aqua retiring as well because the amount of vacant spots for tourney is limited while the amount of holomems is growing every year. They can't add more rosters of 12 people with the current system of 12x3 (where 12 get to Zako, 12 get to tryhard and 12 just finish there), and any major change to this system would increase the length of MK tournament stream at least twice.

It has the same effect on the girls. They're expected to improve and tryhard. Some make it fun like SAO but that only makes it end in tears in the actual tournament, makes it feel like wasted effort. Or worse, fuels narratives like it was with Kanata. And those who aren't that emotionally invested into it just do their thing and forget about it. I don't think the tournament actually makes anyone happy other than the top three winners.
