More like the idol business model isn't feasible in the 21st century. Now that talent can market and sell their product themselves theres less need for management or agents that handle said talent.

30 years ago you needed an agent to handle your finances, connections to seperate businesses (radio, merch production etc) and performance education. But now all people need is an internet connection and you don't even need talent if you have the look right.

tl;dr why the fuck is a vtuber pay up to 30% so a manager can jack off and dm etsy for merch

It might not be a better deal than an agency. But the indie tuber could go to a specific merchandiser to specific merch agency that handles international distribution. It's more work, but in that scenario the vtuber doesn't have to give them a cut of donations and sub income. The benefit would be they can negotiate with several distributors for the best deal and potentially agree on a flat fee.

(Just to clarify im not saying its better, just that it could end up cheaper and less bureaucracy. Which seem to be a consistent issue.)

Hard disagree the qualities that make for good talent don't necessarily make for a savvy manager and thats 3x as true if were talking about young women. If you've made it big it absolutely makes sense to hire a manager or even a team to handle merchandising, events and general administration. The talent should focus on content creation and fan interaction.
