Varies from person to person, but a lot of them have the same overinflated sense of importance as others who do shit for free. (Yes, they earn ad revenue from clips but for most of them it's a pittance.) I generally dislike when they try to grab the attention in chat.

If they're monetized they're cancer. If they do it for free they're based.

The reasoning here is incentives. If you do it because you simply want to spread the good word of your oshi then you want your clip to represent her correctly and in context.
If you do it because you live in pagpag land and you need adsense pennies to pay for your mudhut and you'd immediately stop clipping if it didn't make you money, you're clearing incentivized to take things out of context, farm out drama, clickbait, follow who's most popular and do whatever needs to be done for views. You'll also put really shitty ESL subtitles on your videos to get around Youtube's "reposting content" algorithm.

Consider being one of those clippers that go above and beyond by doing things like compilations or a collection of moments from a vtuber streaming a particular game etc, instead of just making clips of "look at this thing person said on their stream today". Those are always the best clippers by far, and it actually challenges you to do proper good editing. Clips are always at their best when they tell some kind of story or detail a particular event, but its much easier and probably even more rewarding to be lazy and just make a "[vtuber] said WHAT?" 1 minute clip every day instead.

Basically, there's a difference between someone who just crops out a section of a stream and posts it, and someone who handcrafts his own video content using clips. Be the latter, not the former.

They used to make a lot of sense back in pre-EN times because there were very few EN chuubas to begin with but also they played a very important role of translating bits of JP streams. Unless you were already quite adept at speaking nip you probably had to agree least somewhat lean on clips now and then, and for many clips were the only way they really understood anything the JP Holos were doing.

Nowadays however they are more of just clickbait aggregators, often abused by misrepresenting the content and the use they serve is either allowing lazy people to skim hours-long streams for curated content or fod capturing an actually-interesting/notable moment for later. The vast majority of clips were not at all for important happenings however so generally they just are objectively not that needed.

I like Ui's clipper Yura.
I also like Yuri Shizu, used to mostly cover NijiJP talents but also does a lot more Hololive stuff too, and I really like that he'll include what certain phrases mean in the the corner of the video right after they are said or repeated.
I like certain chuuba specifically clippers like naniwazani that'll do something completely autistic.
There was a Nene clipper that was also really good whose name I can't remember, he clipped and translated a Nene stream where a viewer told her that her BGM was killing his brain cells.
