The ground under your bare feet morphs into a dusty, unpaved forest road. Beyond the forest lies a small farming hamlet consisting of a few straw-roofed, half-timbered houses. The fields stand full of ripe grain as the men and boys are hard at work to begin the harvest in a hurry. A few women are sitting by a small stream while washing clothes and knitting, assisted by a few children and an old man. A few smaller children are out and about play-fighting with sticks.
As soon as you come near the village, one of the children runs inside the largest of the houses. A woman, old but still standing tall, leaves the house and admonishes the children who are using their sticks as wands before approaching you.
"Welcome, wandering woman. You must be on a journey from far away, and the sun will soon be setting. Why don't you stay the night with us?"

I yawn and stretch out my arm. She's right walking out of the forest was a lot work and my head is still a bit fuzzy, interdimensional gates feel weird wow.

The old woman beckons you inside and to the table. Even this largest house only has a simple and barely-decorated interior, and the central table as well as the stools surrounding it seem to be in a poor state. She fetches you an apple and a piece of hardtack before sitting down with you.
"I'm sorry, but you will have to eat alone - the rest of the family has many hours of work ahead still, and I will go assist them soon. Feel free to lie down on the sack in the room back there, where you'll be able to stay the night as well. Have a nice meal!"

I look at the meal, failing very hard to hide my disappointment "ah eh, thank you madam, that's ah, nice."
The stool creaks loudly when I seat on it, prompting a "Yabe!" from me, but it seems to hold my tiny frame. I start with the hardtack. It's about as hard as stone, but my teeth have seen harder, so my mouth quickly turn the rock into pebbles and the pebbles into sand and the sand into a bready paste I can swallow. It could use some salt, but I don't see any around.
Thankfully I kept the apple for last, it's crisp and fresh, with just the right mix of sweetness and sourness, I devour it quickly, core and stem and all.
All this doesn't take long at all, so I stand to take a look out the window.

The sun is close to setting, but it is still light enough to see: Everyone, except the smaller children using their sticks as swords, is still hard at work. The old woman who welcomed you and seems to be a bit of a matriarch goes around, briefly talking to every group before settling down with the party that is washing clothes. They seem to wash very thoroughly.

"ohh more comfy than it looks!" It's pretty good for a bag of straw, anyway. I lie down and notice some tooling hanging on the wall next to me. Rusty shovels, cracked hammers and some shoddy-looking pitchforks, probably the work of some ill-equipped local blacksmith. I'm used to better work.
The best maintained piece is a converted scythe, the curved blade rotated a quarter of a turn to turn the farming implement into a weapon of war. Perhaps the region isn't so idyllic as it seems.
I don't worry about all that though, and sleep quickly closes in on me...

As you rush out of the house the first people you see are a few men standing around the old woman from yesterday, now dressed in a shiny white robe. They're standing in the empty town granary as you come to them and tell them about what happened. The woman makes a very concerned face, with the men around quickly following suit.
"How horrible!" she says in a loud voice. "Someone must have broken into house while we were all still busy working. It was some forest bandit, probably, but let us search the village just in case! I will assist you as much as I can - guests having their things stolen in MY house. Unforgivable!"

Other inhabitants do indeed help you search, but even after an hour nothing of your stuffs is to be found in the houses or the area surrounding them. The old woman eventually returns to help with the search.
"It does look like some of the forest bandits or similar folk might have stolen your stuffs...I mean stuff. I'm so sorry about all the nice clothes you had...those damn bandits, they've rarely snuck into our village so brazenly before! But what more can we do?"

The lady was right, my stuffs were nowhere to be seen here in this village. I sighed. I didn't like it, but I might have to exert myself a bit.
"those dirty bandits, do you know where they are? arent there any cool lords of the land that protect you and your stuffs?"

"Oh, our lord! That is a great idea! The baron who owns this land lives in his castle, half a day's journey west from here. If you tell him that you have been robbed of valuable items in this village he will be willing to send out a party against those bandits again, hopefully. I heard that the bandits live to the northwest in the boggy hills, and that they are very ruthless! You should not face them alone unless you are more powerful than you look. I will get you something to eat for the road!"

I pause for some time to ponder my options. I am a knife so I could beat the bandits easily, but that would be a lot of works... But the lord being half a day sounded like a big walk. But also, maybe the lord would have better food, lords usually have good food. And then his soldier will take my stuffs back for me.

This time around you receive two apples, a flask with milk, a piece of fresh bread and a slice of cheese from the woman.
"This is the best we have, given to you as compensation for this accident. We will all pray for good fortune on your mission, and your future travels!"
As you begin to make your way to the baron's castle the inhabitants of the hamlets wave goodbye, paying lots of attention to the foreigner. Even when you look back after a few minutes, they are still observing you leaving.

You follow the path and, later in the day, arrive at the baron's castle. The drawbridge to the castle is lowered, folk and waggons entering and leaving. Many people shoot you a glance because of your ornate dress and foreign looks and the guard at the gate bows as you approach, clearly thinking of you as someone of high status from far away. "Welcome, foreign lady. How shall I announce your marvellous presence to the baron?"

The guard leads you through the courtyard into the donjon of the castle. You enter a large room in which a long table is set, full of delicious-looking food. A few musicians are playing and servants are bringing in drinks and other refreshments to the nobles at the table. At the head of the table sits the baron, a small man about 16 years of age. The guard bows deeply as he approaches the baron. "A guest from far away has arrived, milord. Anya Melfissa from Hololive...Hololive ID."
The baron sets down his wine goblet and looks at you with mild interest. "Well, Hololive is Hololive. Have you come on a diplomatic mission? You are welcome to join the merriment, in any case."

"ah yes, it's very important, but business can wait until after dinner." I reach over some old lady's shoulder and grab a drumstick of roast something to get a bite in before continuing. "wao wao this is good stuffs baron!" I start looking around for a free seat.

The tall old man, Sir Renfrid apparently, gave a polite nod and moved over. You were seated at the table right next to the baron with roast chicken, curd, sausages, wine, good cheese, honey-cakes and more at your mercy. The men around you spent most of the time they weren't eating with singing and laughing.
When the meal was finally finished, the baron burped and smiled. "Damn, there's really nothing better than a feast. So lady, what is your "business" here? I'm open to many things, young and unmarried and at peace as I am."

"A beautiful, noble lady being stolen from in my lands? How horrible! I meant that I am not at war, of course; but you are right that this state of affairs can't be considered peaceful. Hah, let's make sure those bandits aren't at peace then!"
The baron rose from his chair, and everyone in the room went quiet. Despite his small size and young age, he had quite the presence.
"Apparently there's bandits roaming around who robbed Lady Melfissa, my guest, just east of here! It's been too long since we scoured the countryside, apparently. Who here isn't afraid to remove this stain from my land and my honour?"
In an instant, multiple knights from around the table stood up and raised their swords, volunteering to find Lady Melfissa's stuffs in honour of her grace. More followed their example.
The baron turned to you, smiling. "Not to worry, Lady! We'll have the land cleaned up in no time, and wherever they took your stuffs - ehm, stuff - we will find it and return it to you. I hope you enjoy the stay at my humble castle in the meantime - the ladies of the castle will gather shortly, in case you wish to join them."

As the noble ladies at the table get up and leave, you follow them into another room. It is warm and cozy, full of beautiful tapestries. A large red-haired lady turns her attention towards you. "Lady Melfissa, you must tell us about what happened! Where did you get your things stolen, and how? I'm alarmed to hear such a thing."
She only stops looking at you to pick up fabric and needles. "Would you like to embroider with us? It calms the nerves."

The tapestries depict brave knights climbing towering castles and slaying building-sized dragons with those wonky proportions medieval artists preferred, those always put a smile on my face. I haven't seen anything quite so intense in my stay in this region so far. "ah well you know this peasant lady let me sleep in her house, and while I was sleeping someone stole my stuffs! it was terrible really." I ponder for a moment. "you know it's weird i wonder where the lady slept i think she should have heard them get in or something i don't know. maybe she slept somewhere else."

"In that little hamlet an hour of carriage-ride east of here? Lady Melfissa, I'm not sure your things were stolen by bandits who sneak into houses instead of prowling the wilderness...I have heard stories from other folk here, and from traveling acquaintances, who also had something stolen while staying in that area, even shortly after the countryside had been thoroughly cleansed of that bandit scum. And if I remember correctly those incidents also happened towards the end of a month! The baron and his knight-friends sitting next to him should have heard of these incidents too, if they listened when they were reported...but it's likely that they only had heroics and impressing an exotic lady in mind, anyway. Sword-minded, all of them."

The dresses are better than peasant fare, but not by much. Well, I guess having good cooks doesn't mean you'll have a thriving seamstress community. Most of the fabrics feel a bit itchy, too...

I have to take a moment to process the reveal... A witch? That's so weird. Well, witches always spell trouble, that was true back home as well. "well that's not good those knights are just gonna waste their time if the witch took my stuffs. thank for the information lady" I was now well annoyed at the whole situation, and also a bit worried that the villagers might have pulled a fast one on me. That nice old madam that gave me food probably didn't know about their scheme.
I rushed past the tapestry towards the main hall, hoping to ask the baron about this witch.

The stables are a musky and smelly place, the thick air filling my nostrils with the scent of both horse manure and wet straw. Not only that, but the floor has piles of the gross stuff dotted around... Really not the friendliest place to those lacking footwear. If only I had my cool outfit with the cape, that one has cool boots.

I tap my foot impatiently on a rare spot of clean floorboard. I didn't until notice now, but glancing at it, the horse is clearly of good breeding. It's a mare with vivacious eyes which dart around the room, curious but not nervous. Plus dark colors look good with me.
"also can i borrow the horse? i'll bring her back after i have my stuffs, i don't wanna walk anymore it took like all day to get here."
(I'm actually about to go sleep myself, so we can carry on properly in a couple hours.)

As for where the witch lives, you'll have to ask some peasant east of here; I'm not in the business of visiting some forest-dwelling woman. But I can offer you more food and a good room to stay the night - it is getting late, after all. Let noone say I that I do not treat my guests well."

Other inhabitants wish the two of you luck as you go into the forest, following a hard-to-see trail in the dark. After about half an hour you can see a faint light in the distance - a candle-lit window of the witch's hut. As you come closer, you hear humming and the sounds of plants being watered - a hooded figure is tending to a herb-garden next to the hut, seemingly oblivious to any danger.
"That must be the witch! Quick, let's strike first!"

The only Condition actively being used by a kit right now is Darkburn, which doesn't cause you to lose Drive outright. Suisei has a buff that gives allies Bleed on their physical damage (which DOES do chip damage), but she's not finished yet. There's also your generic Poison/Burn/ect. that most RPGs have, but no kits using them yet.
Reactive Recovery can proc multiple times per turn if you have multilple conditions that try to chip you out. All Conditions stack per instance, so you can load somebody up with 10 Bleed stacks if you get a train rolling, and they just explode when they try to use an ability. In Matara's case, you'd roll 10d6 after taking that burst, which might save you from hitting 0.

Shion follows the old woman, keeping a close eye on her and the surroundings.

You and Shion keep following her for another hour or so, the old woman struggling with exhaustion and the undergrowth more and more. But you eventually reach the edge of a clearing, a rocky hill ahead.
"On the other side, that's where the cave is! But look!"
The old woman points directly next to the hill where a mule wanders into view from behind it. It seems to carry heavy bags on its back. After a few seconds a dark, humanoid figure in a long cloak follows the mule, grabs it by a rope wrapped around its neck and leads it back behind the hill.

(This is where I'll have to end it for the day - I'll reply tomorrow, towards the end or after work. Thank you for playing once more! Now the mystery is finally beginning to clear up, and the retrieval of the stuffs is near.)
