There's exceptions but in general I strongly prefer mascot emotes. It makes more sense in terms of me being the one emoting, but also in non autism standards, mascots emotes are darn near always better when it comes to readability, due to having way more simplified designs that make the emotes way less visually crowded. Like I have zero issue being able to tell what Coni's emotes are when they're even smaller than the microscopic size youtube defaults to. Yeah, I understand it's definitely risky to drop school for a small corpo, so sadly college is probably the responsible choice unless she pops off and gets to Rin/Pippa popularity tier. At that point it'd probably make sense to take a year or two off to see where that goes. School will still be there 2 years later, but vtubing and the substantial donothon might not be. It's difficult without inside corpo sources because Youtube CPMs change pretty drastically across content and time. I've seen between $2 and $15 per thousand views on videos, depending entirely on channel audience. In the heyday, men's lifestyle channels were pulling $30+ because those ads paid through the roof. Right now, CPMs are down as much as 40% from the same time last year, so I'm assuming memberships and donations are going to make up the vast, vast majority of it. Stream VODs earn absolutely fucking nothing. 100k views on a 3h stream, $300. All before YouTube cut. Anecdotal of course. Highly doubt that Youtube Premium cuts are going to pay much, but that seems to be what youtube's pushing with their recent adblock crackdown.

My point is that a solo indie contacted cheap manufacturers, forced them to do multiple reruns for quality assurance, and managed to put out underpriced high-quality merch that could easily be sold for double if she wanted to. It wasn't easy and resulted in a LOT of headaches, but it got done. If any corpo worth their salt actually put in the effort, this should be easily doable with an actual management/sales team.

I think everyone is SEVERLY overestimating the manufacturing costs of even limited run merch if you can get to the actual factories (mostly probably in China or SEA). Example being the fact an indie self-funded an entire merch line of 10+ products for her initial run, yet somehow a corpo can't invest a few grand without scamming the audience with acrylics/printouts first to "test the market"?
Maybe they don't have the manpower and end up outsourcing the entire design/manufacturing/shipping/QA process to scalpers at every stage, which is the only justification for why they don't believe merch is profitable. If they could just match this indie's efforts and invested 10% of each girl's donothon money into high quality merch, you'd see it pay off in spades. However, that takes actual effort, which seems to be in short supply (from both talents and management).
Even in China at a small scale for reference (and you can definitely get cheaper in SEA and with larger batches), you can get stuff made cheap. Not 100% sure about custom orders, but using some slightly outdated numbers on pre-made stuff when you visit a factory warehouse, shotglasses were 25 cents each, regular mousepads $1 or less, maybe $3 for a booba one, eye mask for 10-20 cents, keychains are maybe 15-25 cents, daki at most is $3-5, and likely less. You go to a local convention and mousepads are now $10-15, dakis are $30-50, etc. Put it online in the US and then you double/triple the prices again. Even with 0 economies of scale on a small merch run (even say doubling/tripling all the assumed supplier prices), you can still easily make a profit with double the markup Miori did, and still likely sell out from whales alone. That "proof of concept" would work just as well without taking the lazy poster/acrylic route that every corpo does.

TLDR: This is a Baldur's Gate 3 situation all over again. All the giant corpos pretend that something is "too hard" and massively overprice garbage using excuses. Smaller studio comes in and BTFOs them, cue everyone seething about how that cheap+high quality product "shouldn't set the standard" since it's actually a passion project and not cynical laziness.
