They appeared at the perfect time when the world was on lockdown mode and everybody was at home looking for something to cure their boredom. Gura wouldn't be at 4 mil if she debuted in 2019 or 2021. Cover got extraordinarily lucky with their timing.

Pandemic was certainly a buff. They would not have reached the highs they did without covid. They still would have done well though, since I'd argue they were curated well. Ina is an artist that gets commissions from Fate, Gura was a proven million+ view vtuber already, Ame is more or less the gamer of the group, Kiara is trilingual and cut her teeth in the miserable lowest pits of the idol circuit, and Calli is some grindset autist that just likes to produce content. You can complain about them now, but they were good hires at the time.

I don't complain about them personally, I think each subsequent wave of ENs have mostly been a step down actually. Not that Myth is perfect (not a fan of Mori) but generally I think they knocked it out of the park with the casting there.

In the U.S. they were covered by mainstream news and I remember seeing articles where e-celebs were bitching about Gura.
Me, having an interest in Japan turned in to see what the Gura shark was all about, like many others.
English speaking people playing anime characters and drip feeding Japanese stuff. Felt good.

Cant agree. They were basically people who had nothing in common besides being semi popular in their industry with the exception of ame.

Gura was a vtuber with a million+ views on memes, Kiara a cosplayer who had been on JP interview channels more than once, Mori a semi underground rapper, Ina an artist who had big names commissioning her and then Ame.

Like say what you want about them individually but they had some of the worst chemistry together and to this day it still hasnt gotten better. IMO part of the reason they slid downhill so rapidly was because when other vtuber groups started debuting there was a sense of "wow, this is what it looks like to have people with common interests"
On an individual level myth are fairly strong in their fields but together theyre like watching a trainwreck thats about to happen but barely misses completely wrecking, if that makes sense.

It's a bit of a rrat but I believe it's all thanks to Gura and doing a ton of stealth marketing. Ever place potentionally interested in VTubers saw 2-3 posts/memes about her after debut and then never again.

They were inarguably the biggest overseas, almost nobody had even heard of anyone else. They were also already dominating the most watched streams of the day in Japan by mid-2020, no other single vtuber could touch Pekora or Marine (and that's still true now).
