Cover is making the mistake a lot of niche companies make - they're trying to reach a "mainstream" audience without setting a clear definition of what "mainstream" means and how that target audience might be reached. Making your product super-generic doesn't work; you need a way to stand out.

IMO, there is no such thing as a "mainstream" audience - "mainstream" is a useless term - and you have to understand who it is you're trying to market and sell your product to first and foremost.

There are 2-3 popular male idol groups, like SMAP and Arashi, that I know of, which have been active for more than a decade (yeah, I know SMAP disbanded since 2016, but they were active since '88, that's impressive). Not to mention, some of their members are married. It seems like male idols in Japan have different expectations than their female counterparts. Obviously, this doesn't exempt male idols from getting involved in girlfriend yab scandals in most cases. but dunno to me, still not as extreme or dealbreaker like what happen to female idols
