I don't think that's fair. Before Kizuna's clone arc, Kizuna did make an entertaining game streamer. Her gaming channel was partially the reason people still liked her despite the corpo slop shilling.

Things have changed.
Vtubers now do streams with 2D avatars instead of scripted, edited, 3D mocapped videos. They make money from direct donations instead of just corporate sponsorships. And the fanbase they're getting them from consists of more than a couple handful otaku and weebs.
On top of that, some corpos had to learn the hard way that treating your chuubas like shit doesn't go over too well. It's not just a lack of money that killed them.

I remember when I was a Kizuna Ai fan in the so called "golden age" by some newfag tourists now, once the first wave of Vtubers interacting as a group of friends came out, suddenly Ai started to seem outdated, /jp/fags were having fun with all those organic inside jokes that happened on-stream meanwhile Ai was putting out a video of her playing with boxes.
