Like the other anon said, it's like an old school arcade shooter in the C&C universe. You work with your team to destroy the enemy base. I'm going to point out right away that you can freely switch between first and third person at any time, including in vehicles.
You spawn in, use your credits to buy a character or vehicle and join your team. Like the RTS, the gameplay isn't symmetrical, with each side having access to different characters and vehicles. GDI have somewhat better tanks (dual cannon + lockon missle tank) and Nod has somewhat better infantry (stealth guys that are only visible at close range and will sneak into your base and plant nuclear strike beacons).
Every map has its own infantry only area, so if you don't like any of the vehicle vs. vehicle or infantry vs. vehicle combat, you can ignore it completely and keep pressure on their infantry. If you're more into the support slut role, this game will be heaven to you, since engineer/technician are the backbone of any tank squad and can be used offensively with enough C4 to destroy a building alone.

In packed servers a single game can last for hours in a stalemate, usually with one team parking their tanks right outside the enemy base while they keep fighting them back. In order to break these stalemates there's a commander system, where someone can give a defense or offense buff to all vehicles and infantry by their side. Just like the RTS there's also veterancy. If you keep earning points during the game you eventually get promoted to veteran, elite, and finally heroic. Each rank gives you a significant bonus to health, fire rate, damage, movement speed, and even slight health regeneration. A single good infantry or tanker that gets an early promotion to heroic can singlehandedly sway the game in their favour.

If you're taking on infantry as infantry, then it's extremely important. The TTK in this game is usually higher, but if someone's good enough to track your head with some of the more expensive infantry classes, then you'll die almost instantly.
Otherwise, if you're just a repair slut or tank chad you don't need to be downing adderall. My personal favourite thing to do is play anti-tank infantry, so most of the time I'm shooting at big targets.

For the community game day tomorrow:

Renegade X is a free fan-made recreation of the 2002 1st-person shooter Command and Conquer: Renegade.
Unique in being the series' only completed FPS, the multiplayer mode featured team vs. team combat between NOD and GDI.
Typically, the game takes place on a map featuring destructible buildings, with players using these structures to buy different classes of infantry, vehicles (jeeps, tanks, aircraft), and superweapon targeting beacons.
The loss of a teams buildings will prevent advanced vehicles and infantry from being purchased.
Buildings can be destroyed by either damaging the structure, or much faster by damaging the MCT, or Master Control Terminal, inside of it.
Repair is an important part of the game - engineers, advanced engineers, and any character with a purchased Repair Gun can fix damaged vehicles, infantry, and buildings.
Uniquely, buildings have armor and health, and the health cannot be repaired once damaged. This prevents as many stalemates as the original Renegade had.
In-game credits slowly trickle in, but by protecting their Harvester, a team can gain a massive income boost when it returns to base.
Some maps feature defensive structures, such as the Advanced Guard Tower and Obelisk of Light, which automatically target enemies in range.
The factions share similarities, but have significantly different arsenals, with GDI focusing on vehicles, armor, and firepower, and NOD focusing on infantry, speed, maneuver, and stealth.
The objective of each team is to destroy the enemy base while protecting their own.

The game will be played on public servers, which can generally host up to 64 players (including bots). The server in question will be announced day-of.
Voice chat will be provided through the Koopa Discord, with separate NOD and GDI channels.

The bots are typically voted in by however many you want and can easily be voted away. They do get replaced by people joining so they don't take up slots. As mentioned before, the bots sometimes struggle to even get out of the base, so they're mostly something extra to shoot at.
The max player size isn't reduced depending on the map, but now that I think of it there may be a system in place where the end of match map voting only shows maps suitable for the current number of players connected, so that 64 players won't go to a tiny map or 6 people to a giant one. This could be a server dependent setting or something so I'm not 100% on that.

The key points are that changes (commander, unit veterancy, building armor) have been added to reduce the potential for stalemates while also making the game have some of the convenience features of a more modern shooter, such as sprinting.
At its core, anyone familiar with Renegade will be at home with Renegade X.

A couple other things not mentioned is that some servers have Nod vs. Nod versions of some maps. It's just about what you'd expect, but you also get access to recon bikes and an M2 Bradley on either side, which normally aren't able to be purchased in other maps.
Some maps have neutral tech buildings that can be captured with repair guns, such as a silo for bonus credit income.

In general the game is much, much better balanced than the sniperfest that was C&C Renegade, but you'll feel right at home playing it.

For the most part its fairly even between GDI and Nod. I remember hearing the devs talk about how most maps fall very close to a 50-50 win rate for GDI/Nod, with only a few maps being slightly Nod sided. Vehicle limits aren't something that will come up in smaller sessions, they're more large servers so that the map doesn't turn into a gridlock.

The asymmetrical gameplay is fairly well balanced, in my experience the tanks are just fine and there's just one infantry that stirs up trouble.
The most controversial character is Nod's Stealth Black Hand, which is only visible as a shimmering figure at close range or when sprinting, but loses stealth temporarily while shooting. In the right hands they can be game breaking for base sabotage, getting a free pass to waltz across an occupied field with two buddies and plant 3 nuclear strike beacons at once. The fact that this could happen at any moment means that GDI must dedicate a few people to patrol the base (unless its a map with base defenses that are still active) and catch SBH that are trying to sneak in and plant nukes or defuse a building's mines and C4 the master control terminal inside. Not only are they a menace to your base, but also in the field as well. When playing as GDI, never ever get out of your vehicle because a SBH will be lurking for that one moment to steal your tank, and your team is going to be really pissed at you.
I've only ever seen the slimiest of SBH mains ever get shit on for being a nuisance; no one will care what you play.

Going back to nuclear strike and ion cannon beacons again, in the community there's usually a gentleman's agreement not to use them until there's at least 10v10. It can be pretty cheap to lose a building to a 45 second timer when there's hardly anyone there to contest you. Sometimes there's also an agreement not to destroy or damage buildings until enough players connect, because it's not fun joining a losing team.

Aiming down sights is a huge noob trap, it does practically nothing for your recoil and slows you down to a crawl.
All weapons have an effective range; if your reticle doesn't turn red when looking at an enemy then you need to move closer. A repair gun appears to have infinite range, but this is just a quality of life feature for quickly checking player or vehicle health.
Avoid standing still for any length of time, headshots from a sniper rifle will always kill in one shot. If you're getting healed with a repair gun, move parallel with them.
The green crystal patches of ground is poisonous tiberium, only the Nod Chem Trooper can stand in it without taking damage.
You can sprint in vehicles for a speed boost, your turning rate is reduced though.
It might sound obvious, but regular bullets will only do minimal damage against tanks. Lightly armored vehicles such as buggies and mobile rocket launcher systems will take decent damage from bullets.
Tanks have no locational damage, every part takes the same amount of damage.
Headshots deal 5x damage.
Most guns aren't hitscan and need to be lead onto your target. Secondary weapons such as pistols and machine pistols are all hitscan.
The wooden crates you see floating around can give you anything from money, veterancy points, a special heroic character, or a special vehicle. If you receive "an enemy uniform", you won't be targeted by enemy base defenses and your target box will appear green to the enemy team, however their reticle will turn red when aiming at you.
Every character has at least one timed C4. Timed C4 can be defused with a repair gun before it explodes after 30 seconds.
A single Hotwire or Technician can destroy a building alone by sneaking into the base, defusing proximity C4 by the door, and using 2 timed C4 and 2 remote C4 on the Master Control Terminal.
Only place 3 proximity mines per doorway and be careful not to exceed the mine limit; it removes a mine elsewhere. Usually one or two people keep watch of mines and replace them when necessary.
Anti-tank characters have two anti-tank mines, be sure to place them near the base entrance or in the field.
Never get out of your tank as GDI. If playing Nod, ensure there are no infantry around to steal your vehicle if repairing/grabbing a crate.
Hotwire/Technician have an advanced repair gun that repairs much faster than a basic Engineer's repair gun.
One of the fastest ways to earn veterancy points and level up is to repair tanks as Hotwire/Technician. You earn points for vehicle repair and assists from the tank kills.
Your target has their veterancy rank displayed as an icon. Green, bronze, silver, and gold are recruit, veteran, elite, and heroic, respectfully.
Avoid fighting elite or heroic enemy players by yourself.
Infantry on the field should prioritize killing Hotwires/Technicians that repair tanks. Tanks will crumble without constant repair.
The Nod light tank can move very fast with sprint. It may be possible to run over infantry for an instant kill instead of shooting them, especially those with flak armor (anti-tank, repairs)
If you have an advanced infantry and your Barracks/Hand of Nod get destroyed, play as defensively as possible to avoid losing it for good. The same applies to tanks and a destroyed weapons factory/airstrip.
Some infantry have special grenades that can be equipped with X. Officers and snipers get a smoke grenade which can shield you from base defenses, while advanced anti-tank get an EMP grenade that stops vehicles and slowly disarms proximity C4.
If an EMP grenade is disarming proximity C4, you can repair the mines to stop them from defusing.
Pay attention to the enemy airstrike warning message, they come after being called in with a laser designator.
Cruise missiles can be shot down with a railgun/personal ion cannon or difficult tank shots.
Rocket Soldiers can attack buildings from extreme ranges, as can mobile artillery and MRLS.
Call out incoming rushes of tanks or infantry and where they're coming from so your team can properly defend against it. Ex: rockets inc tunnels, tanks inc ref side
If your finger gets tired when repairing a building, enter startfire in console (~ key) to toggle your repair gun on.
A losing team with no infantry or no tanks can still win the game with Rocket Soldier barrages, APCs filled with Engineers, or mass superweapon beacons.

It was fun, it averaged about 12v12 when some random people joined and asked if some youtuber made a video about Renegade X since it's so unusual to see two servers with players at one time.
I'd definitely play again and hopefully rally more troopas to join us. A worod of warning for trying to join a populated server for next time, it fills up in euro primetime (afternoon for the US) and stays full until they start going to bed. There's a chance some people won't get a chance to join.

I recognized some names of really good players and they seemed to be holding back a bit in terms of base destruction. It's common to just let the match go on before going tryhard and blowing up buildings solo.

My longest game was almost 7 hours on the Islands map where each team had one building left and were shutting down rushes left and right. The longer a match goes on the more invested people become in the team, and that's when the unification comes easy.
