The reason Cover did it was they were paid lots of money by Blizzard to promote their game, and they wanted to use it as springboard for more lucrative gaming sponsorships.
The reason people dislike it was that Cover couldn’t get enough talents interested in taking part, (only Stars and Towa) so they had to coerce some to participate, which the talents later revealed. It seems some managers probably got too enthusiastic about having their talent participate, and used questionable methods to fill the slots.
The reason people didn’t watch the stream was part the management fuck-up, part Stars involvement, but the biggest problem was that no one wants to watch a pre-determined steamroll where your oshi loses no matter what.

And even if Esports is doing fine, no one likes the current game roster. Apex is not fun to watch on a casual level, we already saw what happened with 'Mad Dog Aqua', Valorant isn't fun to watch, CoD isn't fun to watch, Counter Strike maybe, but the girls would probably get dominated by the Russian players. Bamco decided they wanted it to be both a game you only play for an hour a day, and an esports tryhard game. This combined with that you stop earning currency after a bit (so you MUST pay real money to buy new suits, no matter how long you play) killed the game pretty hard and no one stuck around.
It's a shame. The game itself is great, even better than Overwatch. But it is a classic case of terrible monetization killing a F2P game.

Honestly, if this were like a new Gen thing, like if Cover specifically recruited a bunch of competitive gamers for esports and they operated completely separate from Hololive/Holostars, this wouldn't be nearly as controversial as it currently is. Making this is own completely separate branch would allow these new recruits to focus entirely on their competitive games to be in top form, as there'd be no expectation to do things such as perform in concerts and other "idol" activities. Being its own branch and not being expected to be idols would even reduce the unicorn/gachikoi outrage since cgdct content would not be expected from them.

The biggest problem with this whole Holizontal project is that half the talents they recruited for this both have zero experience or interest in the competitive gaming scene, nor had they any interest to do any sort of collaboration with their male counterparts beforehand, and it seems management has pressured them to take part in it rather than them having volunteered on their own volition. Both these things are odd, as its not like there isn't a shortage of Holomems that both play competitive shooters and are willing to collab with the males and have done so in the past. Like, why pressure Irys for this when Ame is literally right there? The fact that management is acting awfully shady about this whole thing is turning people away and causing people to question whether Cover management still has its talents in their best interest, when just a couple months ago Cover's staff looked like saints compared to their competitors like AnyColor. All that completely ignores the very obvious fact that nobody likes seeing their oshi get curb-stomped to a point where they're no longer having fun and just going through the motions, and the opposition ends up very obviously sand-bagging in an effort to salvage it. There was a proper way to go about this Holizontal thing, and Cover completely dropped the ball on it because they thought they could get free sponsorship money with minimal investment on their end.
