In this pleasant occasion, I am reading the excellent Twilight novels. The use of the vampire and the werewolf as archetypal exaggerations of the perfect prince and wild boy archetype is definitely noteworthy. It provides a romantic re-framing of what is a common struggle in the world of horror, as seen in the underworld series, to name a single example.
It also reminds us the importance of the possessive love in the vampire genre. These elements were present in the vampyre and in the carmilla, the two big vampire stories, and can be traced all the way back to the vampire by Ossenfelder, and alas seems to have been forgotten in recent days, where narrative focuses exclusive on physical eroticism.

Finished my reread of Rrats in the Walls. It's pretty standard Lovecraft, but I like his style and the buildup of mundane to weird as fuck. Obviously the repeated Shiggerman was funny, but the thing I found neat was his reference to the Piltdown Man since that was exposed as a fake in the 1950s. Obviously this was written in the 20s but it's still a neat sidenote. I'll hold off on more detailed thoughts on the story until we actually discuss it, but if I didn't post this now I'd probably forget about it.
