Modern society and social media has made people addicted drama, cheap sex/vulgarity shock value and connecting through ideology (people are more socially disconnected than ever).

Also, you need certain level of maturity, confidence and culture to be able to enjoy so called childish content, which lots of western people just don't have. Many people claim to be okay with whatever, but in reality it just doesn't sit right with them, unconsciously. Western content's gravitation towards cool and intellectual content relative to Japanese content for example, is very clear.
