I've actually been studying Japanese for 8 years, I'm probably N2 right now (unfortunately, I only have time after work). Let me tell you this: I hate reading lolispeak in pure hiragana (e.g., in moege, etc.) and it's just script away from using romaji. The more kanji the better, hell, I sometimes have problems figuring out what the word means if the author doesn't use kanji for that particular word and just writes it in kana. Saying "the language would be better if it used the script I'm using" without knowing the language only makes you look extremely ignorant.
You should probably learn the radicals before learning kanji themselves or at least familiarize yourself with them, it's a piece of cake after that.

Yeah, it's actually becomes pretty easy when you know what you're looking at.
You can look up the primary school curriculum and what kanji the kids learn grade by grade, that's what I did. Most of them are composed of the same common radicals, so by grade 3 you'll probably know nearly all of them. It's really easy after that, you just know that "the first kanji used for word x is composed of a y radical and right part of the kanji for z," etc. Your brain will probably familiarize itself with them.

Here's the official list, grades 1-6. The way I did it was I looked up some easy words composed of these kanji (even words composed of only the kanji in question) and made myself flashcards in Anki, e.g., 人(ひと) is person, 人間(にんげん) is human, etc. This way you're gonna familiarize with the readings (and some of them can be in most cases be figured out just from the right radical). You can use jisho.org for looking up words. They are so common you probably heard most of words like that in anime and such, so it's gonna be even easier.

Kids have the major advantage of learning the language through 100% immersion, and then they learn the reading and writing seperately.
I've never really completely bought into the "Children are so much better at learning language" thing. Have you talked to a 5 year old? They fucking suck at speaking! Give an adult several years of the same level of immersion with none of the embarrassment of being unable to speak, and the same amount of focus on speaking over other things and I'm sure they'd kick the 5 year old's ass.

Also, most kanji have various readings, a "native" one and a "Chinese" one. The native ones are gonna be usually in standalone words, like 人, 左, 右, etc., while the "Chinese" ones are gonna be in words like 先生, 世界, 人間, etc. In time you'll probably know which readings to use based on a word, so it's not gonna be hard, even if it appears to be in the beginning. Fortunately, the "Chinese" ones can be figured out from the radicals most of the time and learning the "native" ones is basically like learning words in any other language. Just remember to learn the words and how to spell them with kanji, not "learn kanji" (like some people try to teach people online), this way it's gonna be way faster and it's actually how the Japanese learn it.
