Sega Japan (and Sonic Team in particular, of course) has always been insane when it came to Sonic. They directly created and marketed Sonic with the express purpose of trying to defeat Mario, already had huge multimedia empire dreams in the 90s with movies and theme parks and the like, etc. etc.
