I didn't like those two song covers because the mixing, and country roads was okay but not great. I do think there will be a difference between those and her original songs though. Spielberg is a master of visual story telling and character building. these little human moments establish brody as a good and loving father, it also establishes his depression in a way the alcohol alone won't, just him drinking heavily in that scene can give the WRONG impression about him as a character, interjecting the scene with his son, changes the tone of the scene. it makes his later joining the boat adventure to kill the shark, despite his fear of the water a natural action for an angry father (as you can see in the hospital scene).

The crazy thing with Spielberg movies is how seamlessly and effortlessly he builds in these character traits for his characters.
