It the opposite actually or at least in my opinion, Debi is actually one of the more popular Nijisanji members so was their dog and both rarely stream, it's a lot easier to remember a koala demon thing or a literal shiba inu than random school girl #239023480329 , the appeal is you have something that isn't common, in your mind people only watch vtubers for anime cliche's but at the end of the day they're just streamers with avatars and if you have and avatar that doesn't stand out you're going to have a greater chance of being looked over

I think the non-human route is probably the best option for male vtubers, a male audience is instinctively threatened by attractive male avatars, particularly if that avatar is going to interact with their oshi, by using a non-human avatar they are seen less seriously and aren't as threatening and everyone can focus on entertainment without primal caveman urges kicking in
