She says she's Japanese, and she accidentally showed full computer screen a few times - the system language and time were set to JP, and there were a few JP-specific apps installed. So she either tells the truth, or she's extremely committed to her keyfabe.

Her voice is plain weird. I've seen people place her accent as "Russian" a few times before - and it wasn't just the local rrat enthusiasts. It always sticks out to me because I speak Russian myself - and she doesn't really fit the usual "Russian accent" patterns.

There are certain consonants and pronunciation quirks that easily bleed over from Russian to English, and are hell to exorcise - and she just doesn't have them. Nor did she ever show any ability to read or speak Russian on stream, as far as I'm aware. Same goes for Ukrainian, which has a considerable overlap with Russian - but I can't vouch for other Slavic languages.

I'm not sure why people think it's Russian accent specifically. Maybe because her voice has that "exotic, rough" vibe to it, and that vibe often comes from a Russian accent. It might resemble German to others then - German accent being another source of the same vibe.

She's not super shy about her early life, beyond some super specifics. She's talked about how how her family moved overseas for a time in her early life as context for a story about how her father bought her a Land Before Time, I think, in a language she couldn't understand because it was the only movie he could find that he thought she might like and how she'd watch it every day despite not understanding a word, and she's also talked about how being a hapa meant the kids at school bullied the shit out of her in Japan and how she'd damage her hair trying to straighten it out to avoid looking different. She's also talked about how her mother is a serial divorcee and is on like her 4th husband at this point, so it paints a pretty clear picture of her bouncing around a lot as a child before ending up back in Japan as an adult. She probably learned some English and other language as a kid growing up somewhere in Europe, very possibly Romania, which is why she knows how to get her mouth to form the sounds that your average nip just can't do but had the vocab of a 7 year old and couldn't read at all at the start of her vtubing career, and then moved back to Japan in middle/highschool, which would give her a fucking crazy accent. However, she is pretty clearly a native Japanese speaker at this point given how she's fallen back on it when hammered out of her mind, and when having a literal heart attack on stream, twice now.
